The Corporate Vice President, Governmental Affairs will support and engage in policy education and advocacy activities with Congress and federal agencies on behalf of New York Life. The position’s primary area of focus is federal insurance regulation, including, among other things, the Federal Reserve’s regulation of certain insurance companies, the designation of systemically important financial institutions (SIFIs) and other activities of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, policy implications associated with the development of capital standards by the Federal Reserve and International Association of Insurance Supervisors, and the activities of the Federal Insurance Office and Office of Financial Research. This position will report to the Senior Vice President, Head of Federal Governmental Affairs, Julie Herwig. This role will be based in Washington, D.C.
The successful candidate will be responsible for consulting with New York Life’s business experts and state and federal governmental affairs colleagues, as well as relevant trade associations and coalitions, to develop and implement strategies for achieving legislative and regulatory outcomes that are favorable to the interests of New York Life and its policyholders.
Establish and maintain contact with members of Congress and staff, as well as individuals within the relevant federal agencies and other related organizations.
Working closely with the SVP and Head of Federal Governmental Affairs, other senior NYL executives and the governmental affairs team, help develop and implement NYL’s legislative and regulatory strategy and agenda.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments in assigned areas. Provide legislative analysis and prepare policy updates and briefing papers on assigned issue areas.
Engage with major trade associations such as the ACLI and FSR, other lobbyists and coalitions on assigned issues.
Attend PAC events and provide input into the strategy related to New York Life’s PAC budget and candidate disbursements.
Assist other members of the government affairs team on priority issues.
Essential Requirements and Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of government affairs experience. Congressional experience and working knowledge insurance regulation are strongly preferred.
Strong analytical and communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface with senior NYL executives and public officials.
Undergraduate degree. Advanced degree is desirable.
