Job Description

Global in focus, the position reports to the Senior Director, International Public Affairs. The position works closely with the broader Global Policy & Engagement team, including Public Affairs and Corporate Relations colleagues in the markets, and the Issues Management Center of Excellence. The position leads engagement with a broad range of stakeholders to address issues related to sustainability on an anticipatory, business-focused and systemized basis. It also provides practical public affairs support and guidance to markets in related areas.

EXPERIENCE
:  To accomplish the above, it is important that the successful candidate has:

    • International experience and mindset, understanding the impact of developments/issues across the world
    • An ability and desire to understand McDonald’s business, influence and network internally – become involved in the business with strong relationship building, collaboration and influencing skills
    • Strong external influencing and networking skills; strong analytic and analysis skills
    • Bachelor’s degree with minimum five years of related experience in Public Affairs/Public Policy/Sustainability or relevant field. Familiarity with industry preferred.
    • Master’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Business Administration or related area preferred
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

We seek someone who shows passion, energy, excitement and enthusiasm for the journey ahead at McDonald’s. Position is based in McDonald’s Headquarters in Oakbrook, IL (which will be located in downtown Chicago in spring 2018). Some travel required.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: With a primary focus in the area of sustainability, develop and execute strategy and plan for external engagement. This includes:

    • Working with key internal stakeholders to create the strategy and plan for external engagement based on the Company’s business priorities. This includes the broader Corporate Relations team and colleagues in the Supply Chain & Sustainability teams.
    • Leading execution of strategy in partnership with relevant team(s), to build brand trust with stakeholders who influence global debate and policy outcomes that impact McDonald’s. These include intergovernmental organizations, influential NGOs, academia, think tanks, effective trade associations and relevant investors.
    • Building relationships with these organizations through networking and outreach to achieve engagement objectives. This includes working formally and informally with external subject matter experts; representing McDonald’s at relevant meetings; and driving proactive outreach to convey McDonald’s progress in related areas as part of broader effort to build third-party support.
    • Working within and contributing to a globally understood picture of priorities and ownership of audiences and a process that aligns approaches to specific issues and broader issues management within the global landscape.
    • Identifying trends, analyzing risks and developing opportunities for McDonald’s with applied insights from consumers, policy influencers and policymakers, in collaboration with the Issues Management Center of Excellence.
    • Creating tools and executing tactics to assist in managing on-going issues, including developing briefing notes, position statements, and participating in the development of relevant reports and communications materials.
    • Leading and participating in cross-functional teams relating to McDonald’s reputation on sustainability. Providing input into strategic business decision making, through strong relationships with Corporate Relations team and other functions, including Supply Chain, Sustainability, Marketing and Menu.
    • Acting as the “go-to” person when related issues flare up, working in partnership with the external communications team and subject matter experts, as well as providing guidance and support to the local market teams.
    • Sharing insights with the markets and helping markets develop capability in Public Affairs to build understanding and skills, increasing our capacity to proactively manage the stakeholder and issues landscape.
  • Managing the Global Policy & Engagement department budget, supporting the global Crisis Management Team and other department initiatives as needed.

Minimum Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BS/BA degree required
  • 5+ years of experience in Public Affairs, Public Policy, Sustainability or relevant field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:

    • Master’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Business Administration or related area preferred
    • International experience, international mindset, and an understanding of the impact of developments/issues across the world strongly preferred
    • Familiarity with the industry preferred
