The AIUSA Managing Director, Policy and Advocacy is responsible for managing AIUSA's team of human rights experts who contribute regional and issue expertise and strategic and policy direction to AIUSA's grassroots campaigns and carry forward significant on-going advocacy on human rights concerns around the world. AIUSA's current and upcoming campaigns include Stop Violence Against Women, Counter Terror With Justice, defend Individuals at Risk, Abolish the Death Penalty, and promote immigrant rights and health-related rights. This unit currently includes positions for staff specializing in terrorism and counter-terrorism; refugee and migrant rights; health and human rights; corporate accountability and economic institutions; discrimination with respect to gender, race and sexual orientation; human rights concerns linked to international arms transfers and training of foreign security forces; and regional advocates on Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, as well staff specializing in responding to world crises and a special project on science and technology in documenting human rights abuses. Additionally, the work of the unit is made possible by high-level external volunteer advisors on specific issues and countries.
The Managing Director, Policy and Advocacy, will be an outstanding, experienced manager and an accomplished advocate with significant human rights knowledge. S/he will provide leadership and direction to this twelve-person team of high-level staff; manage the administrative, budget, and organizational requirements of the unit; coordinate closely internally with other managers across the organization and with our global headquarters in London and counterparts at other AI branches around the world; and help to represent AIUSA's policy agenda externally. The Managing Director will ensure that the Policy and Advocacy Unit is delivering significant support for AIUSA's priority campaigns, and carrying forward advocacy on issues that fall outside of prioritized campaigns, including through U.S. government advocacy (coordinated with our Government Relations team), external communications, outreach to allies, and support for specialist volunteers. The Managing Director will have a strong commitment to effecting positive human rights change through activism and building a vibrant global human rights movement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Extremely strong management required with a long, demonstrated track record of excellence in personnel and project management. Extensive knowledge of international and US human rights issues with related advanced degree required; advocacy experience in the US, preferably with experience in a comparable advocacy organization, and experience with grassroots organizing and activism strongly preferred. Experience with government relations, campaigning, media, fundraising, and working with volunteers highly desirable. Outstanding communications, diplomacy and interpersonal skills required.
