The focus of NA Government & Public Affairs manager is to support the vice president of Solvay’s Government and Public Affairs department in North America in all matters in order to serve the Business Units and to position Solvay effectively with government stakeholders.  This position is responsible for supporting the development of US government and public affairs strategies, while working as an effective liaison with teams and colleagues in the Solvay business units and functions to ensure a streamlined and coordinated approach. The position will help internal customers understand the US public policy environment and develop strategies to serve their needs.  The position will also interface with US public officials and other external stakeholders, as needed, in order to promote the Group’s position on various issues.  In addition, the position will help to further the department’s focus on the customer by developing value chain outreach strategies that will promote the Group’s business interests while executing developed government affairs strategies.  We are looking for the incumbent to work from Solvay’s Houston, TX or Princeton, NJ location, but are also open to individual in Washington, D.C.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • To represent Solvay and defend its interests in various professional industry associations
  • To advocate directly on Solvay’s behalf with US public officials
  • To support the vice president of Solvay’s Government and Public Affairs department in North America in her various public affairs duties
  • To monitor both federal and state legislation and regulations to notify the Group of future challenges
  • To draft position papers, briefings, and other materials for use with internal and external stakeholders
  • To coordinate all Solvay Employee PAC activity, which includes attending PAC events; working with Solvay Employee PAC Board and the Government and Public Affairs department in North America to develop the PAC strategy for the election cycle; make presentations to various Solvay US plants and offices about the PAC in order to increase/retain membership
  • To mobilize employees on various advocacy issues when necessary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in law, political sciences, or economics
  • A good knowledge of the US, its institutions, and its functioning
  • 5-7 years of experience in the field of government affairs in the US is required
  • Must be flexibility, pragmatic, and have good political judgment
  • Excellent verbal skills and comfortable speaking in front of large audiences
  • Have the desire and drive to act as a company advocate and the ability to influence others in order to get their commitment to ideas, projects and actions
  • Ability to integrate rapidly into a multilingual and multidisciplinary team
  • Comfortable managing and following a large number of important issues in detail simultaneously
  • Ability to quickly assimilate and understand new issues, often of a technical nature
  • Ability to establish strong professional links with the operational departments within Solvay as well as with representatives of other companies and professional associations
  • Represent the department effectively inside and outside the company
  • Strong sense of initiative and proactive approach to identify opportunities for the Group
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously
  • Advanced PowerPoint skills and the aptitude to learn new systems quickly
  • Ability to travel up to 35% including some international travel
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
