The SouthWest Affiliate SENIOR GRASSROOTS DIRECTOR is responsible for developing and executing strategic grassroots action plans for issue based policy campaigns across the states of Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. In particular, he or she serves as the lead for managing and activating AHA’s grassroots advocacy network (You’re the Cure) for the SouthWest Affiliate (SWA). This position will serve as the strategist for the affiliate’s grassroots program. He or she is a skilled organizer with experience in volunteer engagement, social media, coalition building, and campaign planning, as well as having a strong interest in public health policy. The Senior Grassroots Director focuses on state public policy campaigns and reports to the Senior Director of State Policy Campaigns. This position supervises the Affiliate Grassroots Director, Community Grassroots Director, and Advocacy Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Volunteer Management and Community Engagement

  • Manages SWA grassroots action (You’re the Cure) network, the program to build and activate volunteers committed to speaking out on heart disease and stroke issues
  • Executes social media strategy to drive policy campaigns and advocate engagement efforts
  • Generates and maintains content for social media channels, as well as affiliate advocacy website
  • Works in conjunction with State Government Relations Directors to manage volunteer leadership committees, including State Advocacy Committees, State Leadership Councils, and Grassroots Action Teams
  • Develops and conducts internal and external advocacy trainings as needed
  • Recruits local community and civic leaders, as well as members of priority populations to participate in state policy campaigns
  • Works with field staff and coalition members to identify new opportunities to collaborate with state departments and agencies, public health officials, business leaders, universities, community-based organizations to promote campaign’s goals
  • Manages and coordinates Lobby Day activities in SWA states and in Washington, D.C.

Grassroots Advocacy Management

  • In conjunction with State Government Relations Directors, manages all aspects of portfolio’s strategic grassroots action plans, including advocacy activities, digital media, and communication strategy
  • Writes and distributes “call to action” email and text alerts to volunteer advocates
  • Determines strategic timing and mode of communication to grassroots volunteers and key contacts
  • Facilitates issue identification and tracks results and effectiveness of calls to action
  • Produces reports on SWA grassroots action network, key contact and grasstop records, legislative update, and others as necessary or requested
  • Assists with completing quarterly internal lobbying reports and meeting state lobbying requirements for reporting activity and expenses
  • Accomplishment of these goals is achieved through working with the members of the Advocacy team to develop and implement recruitment, retention, recognition, education and mobilization processes with all relevant advocacy volunteers

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President of Advocacy.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s in Political Science, Communications, Public Affairs or related degree preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience in grassroots mobilization, government relations, public policy, issue/campaign administration or related field
  • Ability to travel at least 25% of work time across Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming
  • Ability to recruit, organize, direct, coach, and supervise professional volunteers effectively
  • Experience with supporting integrated campaign strategies – media advocacy, grassroots mobilization, coalition-building and lobbying – to advance policy goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications
  • Ability to demonstrate good organizational skills and the ability to plan and act independently on projects with minimal supervision
  • High attention to detail
  • Multi-tasking ability and the proven ability to meet deadlines on a consistent basis
  • Experience with key leaders, state and local government processes, community groups and influencers
  • Proven experience and willingness to work in an atmosphere requiring flexibility and change
  • Ability to transport materials and other supplies to and from meetings and events
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and, as needed, outside standard business hours
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel when necessary
  • Must pass Criminal, Credit and DMV background checks
  • Performs other duties as assigned
