PTA, the nation's largest child advocacy association is seeking a Senior Policy Strategist for our Washington, DC office. This individual works with the Director of Government Affairs to develop a policy framework to advance PTA's federal legislative and administrative agenda. The Senior Policy Strategist will advise Policy Specialists and other PTA staff on the development of policy and program analyses, issue briefs, building capacity for grassroots advocacy, and media campaigns. Also, assists the President, Chief Executive Officer, and the Board's Legislative Committee on activities and projects, as assigned.
Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, education or children's health, safety and welfare or related discipline. Master's degree in public policy or law degree is preferred. Minimum 5 years combined prior experience in the field of education and/or legislative affairs, preferably legislative staff for elected officials or in a government relations office in a national non-profit organization, with experience in issues related to children's education, health and welfare. Experience implementing and evaluating the implementation of federal education or children's programs or best practices on the state and/or local level is desirable. Experience working directly with children and families in the fields of education or child and family services is desirable. Knowledge of legislative process, education and child advocacy issues required and familiarity with relevant legislation and policy environment is needed. Experience must include attending White House and agency briefings, Hill briefings, coalition meetings, congressional hearings and mark-ups, and press conferences. Understanding of how federal laws and programs are implemented on the state and local level is needed. Strong oral, writing and editing skills are required. Experience drafting legislative language to support public policy agendas is needed.
