This program is eligible for 2 compliance credits toward the Certificate in PAC & Grassroots Management and 2 compliance credits toward the Certificate in Public Affairs Management. As a CAE Approved Provider educational program related to the CAE exam content outline, this program may be applied for 3 credits toward your CAE application or renewal professional development requirements.

Agenda

9:30 a.m.        Online Advocacy and Digital Political Communications Regulations

Online advocacy and digital advertising are now more important than ever, as our social interactions have moved online due to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Many organizations are shifting to a digital approach to advocacy, launching online grassroots campaigns and using digital advertising to promote public policy positions. While this may be unchartered territory, compliance is still critical. Over the last few years, both the government and digital platforms have implemented new rules and regulations. A legal expert will examine:

  • Basic legal guidance for organizations using social media to advocate for legislation or changes in public policy
  • Compliance on major digital advertising platforms
  • When your organization’s digital or social media advertising could trigger lobbying disclosure laws at the local, state or federal level

11:00 a.m.       Using Social Media and Online Communications for PACs

While the FEC prohibits certain PAC activities online, you can still leverage digital communications to motivate your audience. Social media provides a way to stay connected and can be an effective tool as we are all more active online. It’s important to be aware of the legal and compliant ways you can use social media for your PAC. A campaign finance expert and PAC practitioner will tackle the following questions:

  • How can I use social media for my PAC, and can I use private social media groups to solicit my restricted class?
  • What are the new online communications channels and tactics that are FEC compliant?
  • When does a tweet, post, share, like or hashtag count as a solicitation?
  • Can I promote my PAC events on Facebook, Meetup, Eventbrite or LinkedIn?
