Senior  Communications Writer and Messaging Strategist

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
Washington, DC

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a high-caliber strategic policy institute that informs and shapes public policies to reduce poverty, promote equity, and build opportunity and engages on how to raise the revenues necessary to support public investments. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing evidence-based policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and influencing policy outcomes and program implementation. It focuses its efforts on improving the lives of people with low and moderate incomes and examines how policies affect particular groups, including people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people. The Center is known for its unique capacity to blend rigorous, timely analysis with effective communications that enable policymakers and the media to make use of its work.

The Center seeks a Senior Communications Writer and Messaging Strategist to join the Communications team. This individual will expand the Center’s capacity to produce accessible, persuasive materials such as talking points, speeches and presentations, issue memos, and other documents for use by CBPP staff and partner organizations to shape the public debate on key policy issues, including how to build an equitable economy. This individual will also help the Center and partner organizations implement pro-active and rapid-response strategies more effectively, both by tracking policy debates to spot critical moments for engagement and by drafting compelling, concise materials — such as op-eds, statements, memos to cable and Sunday show talkers and other influencers, and social media materials as needed — based on Center analysis. In addition, this individual will provide messaging guidance on a range of policy issues and will work closely with the Center’s policy, government affairs, and state campaigns teams, as well as the leadership of the communications team and of the organization, to coordinate the Center’s overall messaging strategy.
