The West Chester University Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact (CCESI) promotes community-based learning experiences that address issues of public concern by building mutually beneficial partnerships with a wide array of non-profit and governmental agencies, faculty, staff, and students.

CCESI empowers students to be active citizens in their local, national and global communities. Experiences include community service, volunteering, service-learning, social advocacy, voting, and other meaningful ways to make a positive impact.  These programs and services, including the WCU Resource Pantry, provide students with a wide range of impactful opportunities to learn about and address issues of public concern from hunger and homelessness to educational inequities. Through the partnerships with community-based organizations, CCESI strives to equip all students with the knowledge and skills to participate effectively in democratic life as agents of positive social change.

Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement & External Affairs, the Director for Civic Engagement & Social Impact is responsible for ensuring that CCESI fulfills its mission and is responsive to campus inquiries and student needs related to service-learning programs and opportunities.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion; complex management skills needed to work in a multi-layered dynamic organization; experience working with local nonprofit organizations and/or volunteer programs; experience working with the Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact; and is a creative problem solver who can work independently to organize work and set priorities to meet deadline driven critical assignments while providing excellent customer service.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide overall approval authority for the operations of the Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact and WCU Resource Pantry, including staff, programs, technology, and fiscal resources
  • Support the University’s vision to be “a leader in community engagement, building mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders locally and globally” and help develop the strategy to advance this priority
  • Direct and oversee the planning, development, and implementation of infrastructure for the Center and Resource Pantry (such as increased staff, internal and external budgets, physical facilities, and transportation) as needed to support growth in community-engaged learning
  • Supervise, evaluate and promote the on-going development of professionals in the department
  • Implement departmental learning outcomes assessment, benchmarking, and evaluation reports related to Student Learning Outcomes
  • Engage in effective consultation and provide advice regarding ethical issues with colleagues and students
  • Guide staff in developing appropriate alliances with others to efficiently and effectively complete work assignments; recognize how the formation of alliances can either enhance or detract from one’s professional credibility or the use of teams
  • Implement divisional strategies that account for ongoing changes in the cultural landscape, political landscape, global perspectives, technology, and sustainability issues
  • Share data used to inform key decisions in transparent and accessible ways while using appropriate technology
  • Link individual and departmental performance indicators with demonstrated commitment to social justice and inclusion
  • Anticipate technological change and allocate personal, departmental, and/or institutional resources to foster in others a disposition of adaptability, flexibility, and openness to technological innovation
  • Ensure the development of an annual zero-based budget and submit the requests or resources as needed for the budget process and make final decisions on all fiscal matters
  • Work with the Vice President for University Advancement and External Affairs, the WCU Foundation, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to ensure the resources necessary to support community engagement efforts are appropriately utilized
  • Collect and maintain data to track Center programs and collaborate with stakeholders on other University civic engagement initiatives for the purposes of reporting, research, and pursuing external awards
  • Create and submit to the VPUAEA the Division of University Advancement and External Affairs campus-wide quarterly reports
  • Critically examine policy compliance and development efforts related to programs, practices, and services to ensure that they are socially just, equitable, and inclusive
  • Monitor and sustain policies and practices that uphold quality standards within community engagement according to CAS Standards
  • Use data appropriately to guide the analysis and creation of policy
  • Review and approve the creation of professional development plans that are appropriate for individual growth while also serving the current and future needs of the unit where they are employed
  • Develop or lead professional development initiatives that regularly assess the strength and weakness of professionals and provide them with purposeful opportunities to advance their skills and knowledge


Minimum Qualifications


  • Master’s degree
  • Five (5) years of experience in Higher Education
  • Three (3) years of experience managing budgets
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience of professional staff
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook


Preferred Qualifications


  • Doctorate in Higher Education or related field
  • Experience using higher education software systems such as SAP, Banner, PeopleSoft, OnBase, and D2L
  • Human Resources and/or payroll experience
  • Five (5) years of experience working in a medium to large institution organization
  • Demonstrated experience with working with local nonprofit organizations and/or volunteer programs


Special Instructions

The salary range for this position is $69,716 to $79,675.
