Overview of the role

The Trevor Project’s Advocacy team seeks to provide high impact programs to help prevent LGBTQ youth from entering crisis and advance The Trevor Project’s mission to end suicide among LGBTQ young people. This includes life-saving advocacy and policy work in a variety of  key issues facing LGBTQ youth across the United States such as ending conversion therapy, advocating for every school in the country to adopt LGBTQ-inclusive suicide prevention policies, expanding the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity data in death records, and fighting against state-level bills targeting transgender and nonbinary youth.

The Advocacy Associate, Operations will be responsible for supporting the Advocacy team and helping to establish Trevor as a key player in state advocacy. This position will be responsible for providing operational support by developing efficient procedures that streamline all operations for the team, creating and distributing Trevor-branded materials/research/talking points, expanding partnerships through relationship building, data collection, tracking legislation, assisting with facilitation of grassroots organizing, and day-to-day responsibility for local tasks. Further, this individual will help manage the Trevor Advocacy Volunteer program; help coordinate the Advocacy Intern program; and help manage operational necessities for the department, including coordinating travel, scheduling, and logistics for a high-paced, multifaceted, and remote team.

What you’ll do

  • Configure and maintain various communication databases and legislative tracking systems in Salesforce, Asana, Phone2Action, Quorum, and other team tools, as well as train staff, interns, and volunteers on the use of these tools

  • Produce and analyze data that is relevant to the field, including the creation of reports for public consumption

  • Develop and establish processes, procedures, and dashboards related to Advocacy efforts

  • Draft and edit policy memos, comments, letters, talking points, and other advocacy resources

  • Help manage the Trevor Advocacy Volunteer program and help coordinate the Advocacy Intern program

  • Monitor and report on relevant federal and state agency action and federal and state-level legislation

  • Create, implement, and maintain systems for tracking lobbying and other team activities for purposes of meeting compliance and accountability goals

  • Coordinate team travel, scheduling, and other logistics

  • Develop and maintain an operations manual for the Advocacy team

  • Coordinate advocacy initiatives that require collaboration across teams such as research, communications, development, and marketing

  • Review, update, and keep track of the advocacy teams budget

  • Collaborate with other members of the Advocacy team to further The Trevor Project’s mission through legislative advocacy and public education efforts

  • Assist the Development team with corporate partnership deliverables related to the organization’s advocacy work

  • Manage the operational necessities for Advocacy teamOrganize logistics for retreats, monthly meals, community meetings, and other advocacy efforts
