The System Office seeks an Assistant Director of Advocacy to work under the direction of the office of government relations and Director of Advocacy. The Assistant Director of Advocacy works to implement the legislative advocacy strategy for the University of Illinois System, including meetings, events and activities. This position provides strategic support in building strong relationships and partnerships with key external groups, organizations and individuals. This position provides helps with development and assistance in implementing advocacy strategies that advance the University System’s goals and legislative initiatives.

Additional responsibilities include:

 

1. Helps plan and execute legislative events including meetings and receptions in Springfield, Washington, D.C., and Chicago as well as across the state of Illinois as well as on our university campuses. Assist with all event logistics including developing invitation lists, drafting communications to invitees, and coordinating day-of logistics.

2. Develops strategy for recruiting advocates for advocacy network; initiates targeted mailings, email blasts, student and alumni outreach, and advertising; engages various groups within the University community.

3. In partnership with the Director of Advocacy develop and implement strategies and policies to advance the system’s advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal level. Develop and implement strategy for deepening engagement of Illinois Connection’s most active advocates.

4. In partnership with the Director of Advocacy identify key voices to amplify and connect them with the right opportunities to advocate for the U of I System.

5. Act as a liaison to various statewide and university based legislative advocacy coordinating groups.

6. Train various constituencies on advocacy best practices.

7. Assist in management and administration of OGRs advocacy software, including developing and executing advocacy campaigns, developing communications, interaction tracking, reporting etc.

8. Manage advocacy communication platforms within OGR, developing communication in web tools for events, working with UIF to send communications, etc.

9. Responsible for oversight and execution in updating the U of I System alumni database in TED. This includes coding alumni event participation, alumni status as an Illinois Connection advocate, in-district meeting attendance and updating contact information from autoreplies to mass communications

10. Engages stakeholders inside and outside the university system in support of its federal, state and local government relations agenda.

11. Act as a secondary liaison for the three Student Advocacy Coalition student organizations at each university including attending student meetings and advising the groups.

12. Assist the state, local and federal governmental relations teams with lobbying efforts on behalf of the U of I System and engages constituents inside and outside the university system in support of its federal, state and local government relations agenda acting as a secondary liaison with members and staff

13. Provides technical assistance on government relations issues to faculty and staff within individual universities.

14. Assist in responding to requests for information from elected officials regarding University programs, policies or procedures.

16. Significant travel is required for this position

 

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, political science, communications or related field bachelor’s degree with experience in a related field.

2. 3-6 years of successful professional experience in legislative advocacy, governmental relations and /or state or federal government.

3. Experience in event planning and politics/policy.

4. Experience preparing a variety of written communications and communicating to externals stakeholders or political audiences.

5. Experience with advocacy software such as Quorum is preferred

6. Experience with collaborative software such as Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, or Box is preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with University and departmental officials/staff.

2. Understanding of major research universities and higher education policy. Show a passion for higher education and an appreciation and understanding of political audiences.

3. A self-starter with an ability to work independently and possess exceptional organizational skills and exercises good judgment and discretion in the performance of all work assignments.

4. Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.

5. Ability to multi-task and prioritize work accordingly to meet deadlines while staying on task with daily assignments.

6. Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

7. Familiarity with a content management system such as WordPress

8. Ability to travel per job requirements.
