Job Summary

This position supports the Association’s government relations work in Washington, D.C. The Assistant Director provides essential support to the Senior Director and leads on particular advocacy initiatives with the Congress or a federal agency. In addition, the Assistant Director develops and implements strategies to promote and augment the advocacy efforts of the Association. The Assistant Director also works with the Assistant Director of State Chapters and Advocacy to support the advocacy efforts of the Association’s state affiliates. The Assistant Director works with the Assistant Director of State Chapters and Advocacy on the development of state model legislation that support the profession. In addition, this position will support state affiliates in responding to requests for comment on legislation, regulations or guidance, as well as legislative testimony, in consultation with and/or in collaboration with the Senior Director. This position is also responsible for following state legislative and policy trends and to communicate the trends to the membership, the ACSR Executive Committee, state chapter leaders, and AACTE staff, as well as to formulate and implement strategies on said policies with political acumen. The Assistant Director is responsible for drafting advocacy materials, including letters to Congress and Action Alert texts, as well as advocacy guides and blogs. The Assistant Director will represent the Association at coalition meetings, congressional meetings, and agency meetings as needed or with the Senior Director. This position will also work with the Senior Director on the Association’s Government Relations and Advocacy Committee to implement directives and initiatives of the Committee to augment the advocacy capacity of the Association’s membership. This position includes the analysis of legislation, regulation, and guidance, and the development and implementation of strategies with political acumen on said items. This position also includes the opportunity to develop lead Association advocacy initiatives and partnerships.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

    • Support the Senior Director in advancing the legislative and appropriations agendas of the Association
    • Represents AACTE at coalition meetings, at times with the Senior Director
    • Attends congressional or agency meetings, briefings or hearings, at times with the Senior Director
    • Represent the Senior Director at meetings as needed
    • Manage the AACTE Action Alert system, including drafting letter text, crafting video messages, and other methods to encourage membership to participate.
    • Develops and maintains relationships with AACTE partners at the state and federal levels to augment the advocacy capacity of the Association and the state affiliates.
    • Develop advocacy materials, including letters to the Congress or the Administration, in consultation with the Senior Director.
    • Follow state policy trends and communicate said trends to key AACTE staff and the ACSR Executive Committee, and develop strategies on said trends as needed.
    • Develop and create new AACTE advocacy guides at the state and federal level in coordination and collaboration with the assistant director of state affiliates and advocacy and the Senior Director
    • Assist and coordinate the development and implementation of AACTE’s Day on the Hill and other advocacy trainings and initiatives, including at the Annual Meeting
    • Assist and coordinate the development and implementation of AACTE congressional briefings, including logistics and resource development
    • Craft and lead webinars on subjects including advocacy campaigns, Action Alerts, and state policy trends
    • Manage, maintain, and augment (as needed) the AACTE Advocacy Center, and inform the membership and state chapters, of said updates, including new advocacy guides and resources, through Ed Prep Matters, State Directions, and social media
    • Manage, maintain and augment (as needed) the state and federal policy and legislation web pages in collaboration with the Assistant Director of the State Affiliates and Advocacy and inform the membership and state chapters of said updates, through Ed Prep Matters, State Directions, and social media
    • Develop in consultation with the Assistant Director of State Affiliates and Advocacy the State Directions Newsletter
    • Manage the State Policy Tracker and train state chapter leaders and legislative liaison, government relations committee members, or a designee from a state chapter on how to utilize the State Policy Tracker for advocacy and engagement, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of State Affiliates and Advocacy
    • Research, analyze, and follow federal and state (as needed) legislation, regulation, and guidance; work with state chapters in response to said items, including training and support in drafting testimony and official comments.
    • Formulate and implement in collaboration with the Senior Director advocacy strategies and initiatives at the state or federal levels utilizing political acumen
    • Work to inform the membership of federal funding opportunities through Ed Prep Matters and social media, including when webinars are offered on said opportunities
    • Support and lead (as needed) the initiatives and directives of the AACTE Government Relations and Advocacy Committee
    • Identify opportunities for AACTE to lead or support advocacy initiatives either at the state or federal levels
    • Draft content in support of the marketing and communications of AACTE events and advocacy opportunities, including for blogs and social media
    • Draft model legislation, in collaboration with the Senior Director, for state affiliates in the support of the profession.
    • Some travel required (up to 10% of time)

 

Additional Responsibilities

    • Develop background and briefing materials for the Senior Director or the AACTE Board as appropriate
    • Compose correspondence, reports, memos or other materials as needed to support projects and activities as appropriate
    • Serve on staff committees and project groups as appropriate
    • Other duties as assigned

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • There is potential to supervise interns as appropriate

Requirements

Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in education, political science, or related field, required
    • Master’s degree, preferred

 

Experience

    • Working Capitol Hill or in a federal agency, 3+ years preferred
    • 5-7 years advocating at the state or federal level, preferably in education
    • Federal or state level policy development, preferably in education
