Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the management of the Media Relations group in the Department of Global Marketing and Communications.

**Candidates for this position should be prepared to work after hours and on weekends as necessary to attend events and complete assignments satisfactorily.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Manage on a daily basis all of Northwestern’s media relations activities.
  • Supervise the media relations staff in the Department of Global Marketing and Communications
  • Direct Northwestern’s internal communications, including all news content on Northwestern’s home page and Northwestern Now web news-hub page.
  • Work closely with the Vice President for University Relations to direct the production of an annual Media Analysis report on major media placements secured by MR—including a comparison of metrics with peer institutions, graphics and charts, and a new, detailed, supplemental report.
  • Work closely with the Vice President for University Relations to help manage crisis communications issues, emergency communications responsibilities, and reputational risk assessments and mitigation strategies—and serve in that role in the absence of the VP.
  • Work closely with the Vice President for University Relations and others in GMC on supporting the president of the University in promoting media coverage of his goals, events, travels, interviews, op-eds and books.
  • Work with reporters/editors/producers from local,national and global media to drive coverage of Northwestern across legacy, digital and social media.
  • Match faculty with breaking news stories to place faculty as expert commentators in the media and assist them edit and place their op-eds.
  • Work closely with directors in GMC to help lead the work of units across the department to inspire values-based storytelling by encouraging creativity, collaboration, a focus on brand identity and integrated content creation.
  • Lead the media relations staff to be innovative storytellers in a fast-changing media landscape, exploring new data bases and online media outlets as well as methods—info-graphics, videos and podcasts–to reach key audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates for this position must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in media relations with a demonstrated record of success working with local and national media.
  • Managerial/supervisory experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of print, broadcast and digital media.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Strong writing/editing skills.
  • Undergraduate degree in English, journalism, public relations or a related field or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Master’s degree in journalism, integrated marketing communications or related field or equivalent experience.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Familiarity and experience in working with broadcast media, digital media and social media.
