Associate Chief External Affairs

The Associate Chief of External Affairs for UVA Health is responsible for developing and implementing the purposeful and organized engagement of the Northern Virginia communities UVA Health/UVA Community Health serves. The Associate Chief cultivates strong relationships with regional state and local government officials as well as influential community leaders in the Northern Virginia region to advance UVA Health priorities and advocacy initiatives. The Associate Chief advises the Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO) and other internal stakeholders on emerging issues and opportunities in the Northern Virginia region and recommends action plans as necessary. This position reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer and is based in Northern Virginia but requires occasional meetings and events in Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In consultation with the UVA Health Chief External Affairs Officer and the UVA Health government relations team, develop and implement purposeful and organized engagement of the communities UVA Health serves, specifically in Northern Virginia.

Cultivate strong relationships with and lead the engagement of state and local government officials and other influential community leaders in the UVA Community Health Northern Virginia region to promote and advance UVA Health advocacy priorities.

Create and maintain positive public awareness, understanding and support of UVA Health and the health system initiatives throughout the Northern Virginia region.

Develop and execute a yearly strategic advocacy plan for UVA Community Health that complements the overall UVA Health advocacy priorities and make data driven recommendations for action as needed.

Closely monitor and identify emerging issues and opportunities within the Northern Virginia region and make recommendations for actions as needed.

Work closely with the University’s state relations teams as necessary.

Provide strategic support as needed during the General Assembly each year.
Position Compensation Range: $182,603.20 – $292,156.80 Annual
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Masters or other advanced degree preferred
Experience:-
Substantive, first-hand knowledge of the Northern Virginia political landscape and legislative processes at both the state and local levels

Established bipartisan relationships at all levels of government

Knowledge and understanding of the major issues affecting the health care industry and those specific to Virginia

Ability to collaborate, influence and effectively engage with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders

Exceptional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential issues
Licensure: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
