Associate I, Communications


This position reports to the manager, communications, based either in Pew’s Washington, DC or Philadelphia, PA offices, is eligible for up to 60% telework.


Position Overview


Are you passionate about media relations, writing, social media, public policy issues and philanthropy? If so, this is the right opportunity for you.

In this role you will:

  • support communications for Pew’s Philadelphia programs (which include the Philadelphia research and policy initiative and grantmaking programs in health and human services, arts and culture, and civic initiatives) and Pew’s state economic and fiscal policy work across the country.
  • utilize your interpersonal and organizational abilities, keen attention to detail, writing and editing skills, and media relations experience.
  • juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines.



  • Drafts and updates website content and text for email and social media outreach and talking points for spokespersons, including staff and external partners. Drafts and distributes newsletters, media pitches and other communications materials.
  • Assists with research, planning and logistics for occasional public events and internal communications trainings.
  • Arranges media interviews for spokespersons and helps with preparation for interviews and public appearances. Responds to initial press inquiries and helps coordinate responses as needed with senior communications colleagues to ensure professionalism and message consistency. Pitches Pew publications and experts to reporters.
  • Monitors media clips daily and compiles and distributes media reports. Uses tools including Salesforce, Cision, and Nexis to develop media lists and monitor media clips, report releases and speaking engagements.
  • Drafts submissions to the Communications department weekly update and other items for internal reporting to the CEO and the Board of Directors; drafts and distributes regular reports on the status of communications products for project directors. Selects and submits key events for the Pew Communications planning calendar.
  • Works with communications colleagues on the production process for digital and print content and communications, including media reports.
  • Supports communications and organizational strategic planning to ensure communications strategy is aligned with organizational goals and regularly informs teams of media outreach efforts and results.
  • Contributes to and participates in program and communications department tasks as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and/or committees as needed.
  • Assists other communications project teams as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required and a minimum of one year’s experience in a nonprofit, public policy organization, or public relations agency, including work in communications.
  • Understanding of media operations and news organizations and experience with media relations.
  • Experience creating and maintaining media lists and monitoring for media mentions and distributing clips reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (Knowledge of Associated Press style a plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle and manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines and work well in a team and independently.
  • Good project management skills and attention to detail with demonstrated political skills and judgment.
  • Ability to learn subject matter in a wide range of state and local policy areas, as well as philanthropy and grantmaking.
  • Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
  • Knowledge of Philadelphia and/or public policy a plus.



Occasional travel to attend meetings and conferences.
