The External Affairs team brings together BlackRock’s approach to public policy, philanthropy, corporate sustainability, and our broader societal engagement. This Associate will work closely with the External Affairs COO, Director of External Affairs, External Affairs Chief of Staff, and Head of External Affairs, serving as a central coordinator of projects across the External Affairs team and the broader firm. This Associate will direct and/or support project management, implementation, coordination, and research for strategic initiatives. They will report into the External Affairs COO and help drive day-to-day-operations for the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the External Affairs COO, Director of External Affairs, External Affairs Chief of Staff, and Head of External Affairs to lead initiatives and process improvements across External Affairs
  • Assisting in the development, implementation, and tracking of projects in support of the COO and ensuring that all are moving in a timely and effective fashion
  • Monitoring and tracking engagement with external organizations, including trade associations
  • Helping set agendas and prepare materials for External Affairs Committee meetings and External Affairs town halls
  • Creating content for External Affairs newsletters and other communications
  • Drafting executive-level presentations, briefing materials, and talking points on relevant subject matter for use with internal and external audiences including the Board, GEC, ExCos, clients, policy makers, media, and the public
  • Leading document management and contacts management processes
  • Delivering ad hoc assignments initiated by External Affairs leadership
  • Working closely with the Global Public Policy Group, Social Impact team, Corporate Sustainability team, and Stakeholder Capitalism team
  • Working with the External Affairs COO on cross-functional opportunities to achieve BlackRock’s objectives, increase operational efficiencies, and deliver against talent priorities
  • Taking a strategic mindset and connecting the dots across multiple initiatives
  • Navigating the organization to obtain necessary fact-checking and insights
  • Working closely with L&C, HR, and other teams across the firm to drive operational excellence
  • Driving a strong culture by bringing principles of inclusion and diversity to the team

Skills/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree with strong record of academic achievement
  • 3-5+ years of experience in asset management or financial services
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Creativity and the ability to put structure around “big-picture” questions
  • Keen attention to detail, especially under pressure
  • Ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment, responding to tight deadlines and multiple demands
  • High-energy, positive “can-do” attitude, and an ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to manage complex, interdepartmental projects in a professional and inclusive manner
  • Interest in global markets, investor needs, corporate sustainability, social impact, and public policy
  • Excellent writing and oral-communications skills, with the ability to present complex concepts in a concise and understandable way
  • Mastery in document creation (e.g., decks, talking points, memos, etc.)
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, DOX, Salesforce, and Red Oak
  • Good judgment and impeccable ethics
