Reporting to the AVP of Political Affairs, the Associate Director for Advocacy serves as a critical member of MBA’s Legislative & Political Affairs (LPA) group, managing the daily activities related to growing and sustaining the association’s grass roots/grass tops outreach via the Mortgage Action Alliance (MAA), MBA’s free grassroots advocacy network for real estate finance professionals. 


The incumbent conceives, plans, manages, and implements initiatives designed to steadily grow and strengthen the Mortgage Action Alliance (MAA). Develops and deploys initiatives related to those goals, including the refinement and execution of a key contact program, the      delivery and execution of all MAA “Calls to Action,” and other recruitment/renewal efforts. The incumbent will also manage MAA’s digital and social media content and online presence and utilize third-party services to track, analyze, improve, and promote the effectiveness of MBA’s key contact targeting and all MAA’s campaigns, initiatives, and member engagement efforts (with an emphasis on sustained growth over a five-year horizon). The responsibilities will include managing a new FTE (Grassroots Advocacy Specialist) based on approval. 



  • Assist AVP of Political Affairs and SVP of Legislative and Political Affairs in developing and executing grassroots and grass tops initiatives for MAA (with an intense focus on growth and retention)
  • Serves as lead recruiter and strategist for the Mortgage Action Alliance
  • Works in conjunction with other relevant MBA staff, MBA leadership, and volunteer leaders on the MAA and MORPAC Committees 
  • Manage MAA Steering Committee and the planning of MAA-related meetings and events, such as national Action Week campaigns on a biennial basis
  • Organizes and develops strategies to enhance awareness of association advocacy programs at every major MBA conference/convention
  • Organizes and develops strategies to effectively engage association stakeholders on key priority issues via direct and indirect lobbying/advocacy efforts
  • Acts as the project lead with existing third-party vendors to review, analyze and report on MAA’s member retention and effectiveness
  • National Advocacy Conference (NAC): With the AVP, coordinates with MBA’s External Relations Group in the recruitment of sponsors and manages outside vendor in the scheduling of Hill meetings (working with MBA lobbyists on Hill outreach)
  • Manage the activities of LPA’s Grassroots Advocacy Specialist, including the day-to-day operations of MAA including, but not limited to, processing new MAA enrollments, recordkeeping in accordance with Federal Election Commission (FEC) guidelines, updating and maintaining advocate records and revitalizing and deploying a key contact/grasstops database (as it relates to the current composition of a Congress and beyond)
  • Serve as the primary staffer responsible for managing the distribution of content such as MAA communications, Calls to Action, push notifications and other materials developed by LPA team via third party mass email platforms, the MAA App, and social media
  • Posts Political Affairs content, including videos, newsletters, advocacy spotlights and other materials on and the staff intranet 
  • In keeping with established MBA guidelines, advances MAA’s social media presence (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook) by distributing compelling content of interest to MBA members, MAA influencers and other stakeholders
  • Works in conjunction with other relevant MBA staff and volunteer leadership to conduct advocate prospecting and outreach and aggressively promote MAA amongst heretofore underutilized industry segments
  • Manages strategic initiative technology efforts and coordinates all integrated efforts with IT/Legal/Marketing departments in the development, refinement, delivery, and ongoing utilization of tools to enable and increase MAA enrollments
  • Coordinate with the AVP and PAC team to ensure MAA and PAC communications and materials support larger association advocacy goals and initiatives

The ideal candidate should have an undergraduate degree in political science, communications, or public policy with a minimum of three to five years of experience in political advocacy or administration of a grassroots program with demonstrated success. Additionally, professional advocacy experience with exposure to the federal legislature and regulatory process and two to three years’ experience developing and executing social media communication strategy desired.


The candidate should have strong writing skills and an understanding of how to develop compelling content on a variety of social media platforms, including experience deploying digital content via email, web, and social media. Candidate must also be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and deliverables that can change within the same week or even the same day. A strong interpersonal skill set with confident sales/customer service capabilities is a must.


Advanced skills utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and knowledge of Voter Voice and database management software considered a strong plus. 

The candidate must be meticulous/detail-oriented, enthusiastic, well-organized, possess strong time management skills and understand Congress and the political process. Approximately 25% travel is required for this position.
