Associate Director for External Relations
The Haas Center for Public Service is seeking an Associate Director for External Relations. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director for External Affairs oversees the Haas Center’s development and external affairs, including fundraising and donor relations, communication, alumni relations and other special programming. This Associate Director manages a team and is responsible for prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, mobilization of outside support, and coordination of internal support activities. The Associate Director serves as a member of the Haas Center’s leadership team, which guides financial and program planning, budget management, personnel matters, and strategic priorities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead and manage a team responsible for the Haas Center’s fundraising, communication, outreach, alumni volunteers and external relations efforts that build and sustain the work of the center.
- Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, professional development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees.
- Lead a wide range of fundraising activities, including providing stewardship, identifying new prospective donors, developing solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies that cultivate support for public service education through the Haas Center and Cardinal Service. Maintain systems to track solicitations and fundraising progress.
- Oversee annual giving program that generates large and small contributions, and develop relationships leading to gifts in the $250,000-$10,000,000 range.
- Enhance relationships between current and prospective donors, including management of the Haas Center’s National Advisory Board.
- Lead and manage staff to oversee internal and external communications to all stakeholders (students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners), including print, web, and social media activities.
- Develop and manage annual budgets and planning processes for development, communications and other special programming, and oversee assessment and evaluation of these areas.
- Serve as the Haas Center’s primary liaison to the Office of Development. Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures related to development and communication.
- Work closely with colleagues to align program goals with overall fundraising, communication, and outreach goals.
- Haas Center-wide responsibilities include:
- Represent the Center at campus and community meetings
- Contribute to data collection and evaluation efforts
- Participate in unit and staff meetings
- Engage in professional development, including attending and presenting at field-building conferences and retreats
- Contribute to center-wide celebrations and support key annual Center events
- Other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this position you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
- Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of students, faculty, staff, executives, and community leaders.
- Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Demonstrated commitment to public service education in higher education.
- Knowledge of Stanford University policies, procedures, and resources related to fundraising; proficiency working with Postgrads or similar fundraising databases is desirable.
- Prior experience in fundraising and donor relations in postsecondary environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and self-motivation.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in building community among different groups in university and community settings.
- Ability to effectively utilize and keep up-to-date with software packages (Microsoft Office suite is currently used), social media, and other communication technologies.
- Ability to effectively and creatively lead teams and manage/supervise diverse operational groups towards excellence in execution and scaling.
- Ability to manage complex personnel and financial issues, including developing, analyzing and monitoring complicated budgets.
