The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) is a dynamic and growing non-profit organization dedicated to research, advocacy, and patient and medical education as we work toward a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and support those impacted by psoriatic disease. The NPF is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual as our Associate Director of Federal Government Relations & Health Policy to work out of our Alexandria, VA office.

The Associate Director of Federal Government Relations & Health Policy will be responsible for identifying and pursuing federal issues of significance to individuals with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; developing policies and resources to advocate on these issues; and representing the NPF in federally focused coalitions and before federal policymakers. In addition to advocating directly to federal policymakers within Congress and the Federal Agencies, this position also advocates directly with the private insurance sector and other allied stakeholders to improve policies and advance the health and wellness of the psoriatic disease community.

Responsibilities include:
  • Work with the Vice President of Government Relations & Advocacy, colleagues in the Advocacy Department, staff leadership, and NPF volunteer leadership to develop health care insurance, coverage and access policy priorities
  • Create policy papers, summaries, talking points, briefs, and presentations to build and account for NPF’s positions
  • Provide specialized, high-level expertise on access to care issues and federal regulation; assist NPF in addressing complex access to care issues facing people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; and serve as NPF’s staff lead on insurance access issues
  • Build and continue close working relationships to improve strategic alignment with key federal groups such as the National Health Council and federal coalitions
  • Cultivate and build relationships with members of congress and congressional staff
  • Lead and organize high-level events including an annual Washington Fly-In, congressional briefings, roundtables, trainings for volunteers, and other opportunities that contribute toward the advancement of NPF’s mission
  • With a goal to reform policies so they are more patient-centered, participate in telephone negotiations, in-person meetings and correspondence with insurers
Requirements include:
  • Five or more years of relevant work experience in federal government relations/public policy/regulatory analysis; experience in a government, non-profit or corporate setting
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Preference given to those who have active working relationships with congressional staff
  • Working knowledge of the congressional process and federal health agencies
  • Demonstrated federal government relations and policy analysis skills, as well as comfort and familiarity with reading and analyzing legislation and regulation
  • Advanced analytical/writing skills to develop policy positions
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Excellent communication skills – writing, editing, and speaking; comfort or experience with public speaking
  • Strong interpersonal skills in working with alliances, stakeholders, staff and volunteers
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; strong project management skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and resourcefulness; ability to work independently
  • Ability to be driven by a passion for policy reform, and to be highly motivated to succeed
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required
