Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of the School of Public Policy (SPP), the Associate Director for Marketing and Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of dynamic and creative marketing and communication plans for the School, which focus on student recruitment, retention, and the promotion of SPP activities and events, and instill a strong sense of SPP’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and community.

 

Essential Functions

  • Lead the development of annual strategic marketing and communication plans, with the collaboration of the Director and other stakeholders, that include strategies and activities that help achieve recruitment and retention goals, and support diversity, equity and inclusion. Regularly evaluate effectiveness of marketing and communication activities, updating or changing plans as needed to achieve goals.
  • Implement marketing and recruitment activities. Identify populations of prospective students, and create and manage marketing activities that utilize customer relationship management (CRM) software, multiple social media channels, print and electronic direct marketing, the SPP website and events.
  • Serve as SPP media contact and oversee communications about the activities of SPP faculty, students, alumni and staff. Research and write feature stories, news releases and promotional materials. Prepare newsletters and bulletins using email marketing software. Develop and oversee SPP branding. Manage SPP website and social media channels. Coordinate with outside vendors for production of materials. Support communication for development activities as needed.
  • Manage public events, guest speakers, seminars and conferences. Prepare and distribute event communications, and track event effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with, and serve as liaison with other UMass offices to coordinate marketing and communications. Provide advice to SPP faculty and staff about communication opportunities, consistent messaging, and appropriate collaboration or approval.

 

Other Functions

  • Manage student workers as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor showing adaptability and flexibility to accomplish goals.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism, or related field.
  • Five years of experience in communications and marketing.
  • Excellent managerial, planning, project management, and facilitation skills with high-level attention to detail and quality.
  • Experience working collaboratively. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly develop and sustain productive relationships with a variety of internal and external consultants.
  • Experience writing in a variety of styles and formats and demonstrated experience in developing and managing communication strategies for interdisciplinary initiatives and projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to construct compelling promotional copy as appropriate for the intended audiences. Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
  • Experience producing, editing, and writing online and print publications, and with photography and video production. Proven ability to conduct research and interview subjects for writing assignments.
  • Experience with digital marketing, social media content creation, and design and management of websites.
  • Understanding of current media technology and software relevant to program marketing and communications. Understanding of the potential of new technologies to advance goals of the position.

 

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism, or related field.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Interest in public policy.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office environment activity.

 

Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • May be required to do occasional day or overnight off-campus travel.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • This position has the opportunity for a flexible work schedule, which is defined by the University as a schedule that allows employees to adjust the start and end times of their work day, but maintains the total number of hours worked in a day or week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
