Your Role

The Communications, Citizenship and Reputation team advances our company’s reputation and enables the organization to better serve our employees, members and providers. The Associate Director, Media Relations – Public Policy will report to the Senior Director, Corporate Communications. In this role you will proactively tell our health reform, technology and transformation story, and amplify our engagement, advocacy and thought leadership on public policy-related initiatives across earned, owned and social media channels. The role is a key member of Blue Shield of California’s Communications team, supporting our efforts to advance our company’s reputation and better serve our members and providers.

Your Work

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategic communications plans in support of Blue Shield of California priorities, with the goal of establishing, advancing and maintaining a favorable corporate reputation with various audiences
  • Anticipate and manage issues and threats to Blue Shield’s reputation, proactively prepare for potential issues, and respond quickly to unforeseen issues, in coordination with multiple departments and internal stakeholders
  • Work in close partnership with the External Affairs Reputation and Thought Leadership practice to develop thought leadership initiatives and prepare executives for external engagements, meetings and/or speaking opportunities through coaching and the development of presentations, messaging documents, speeches and talking points
  • Establish and manage relationships with the media (reporters, editors) and social media contributors, serving as on-the-record spokesperson
  • Promote Blue Shield messages and strategy through media relations; respond to media inquiries on issues, working to minimize negative coverage; pitch positive stories about Blue Shield products or programs to news reporters
  • Value the goal of establishing and maintaining a favorable reputation with key internal stakeholders
  • Track and manage issues, including content (holding statements)
  • Support media training and presentation coaching initiatives
  • Work closely with the Government Affairs team to support its strategies including health reform and other policies that support Blue Shield’s mission as a nonprofit health plan
  • Engage with Executive Communications and Corporate Citizenship teams

 

 

Qualifications

 Your Knowledge and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Requires at least 10 years of experience in strategic communications, including a demonstrated track record of providing advice and counsel to management, developing and executing successful communications strategies and programs
  • Have a strong news sense and news-writing background
  • Have proven results in proactive media engagement and media relations, as well as crisis communications experience
  • Have direct experience coaching C-level executives on media and social media strategy and content, including on-site support at executive speaking events
  • Possess familiarity and knowledge of the legislative/regulatory process in Sacramento and Washington D.C., and the health policy at the state and federal levels
  • Have a bias toward action and independently work to develop content to promote Blue Shield of California’s brand and reputation through traditional and new media channels to our members, the general public, key influencers, industry and stakeholder groups
  • Be available to travel, on occasion, for executive visibility support and media relationship building

Physical Requirements

Office Environment – roles involving part to full time schedule in Office Environment. Due to the current public health emergency in California, Blue Shield employees are almost all working remotely. Based in our physical offices and work from home office/deskwork � Activity level: Sedentary, frequency most of work day.
