Associate Director, Public Affairs and Sustainability
Position Summary
The position is responsible for leading all public affairs and communications efforts for the Plastics Division’s Sustainability Team (PST), including strategic planning, audience targeting, message development, and content creation and promotion. This position is responsible for positioning Division leadership as thought leaders in key sustainability media outlets and at national sustainability events; supports the Division’s director of media relations with media outreach on state affairs issues; and plays a key role in planning and marketing the Division’s annual Circularity Summit. This role coordinates across the Plastics Division and with ACC’s Communications Department, Federal Affairs, State Affairs, and Sustainability departments, and reports directly to the Senior Director, Public Affairs and Communications.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
■ Leads and executes a communications strategy, including message and content development, audience targeting, and thought leadership activities to support the Sustainability Team’s priorities, including advanced and mechanical recycling and related public policy.
■ Leads development and execution of promotional planning, messaging and communications materials for all technical reports issued by the Division’s Sustainability Team to influence policies on circularity, recycling, life cycle, sustainability, Roadmap to Reuse, and measuring progress toward the Division’s 2030 and 2040 goals.
■ Leads media outreach on legislative developments in states.
■ For the Division’s annual Innovation and Circularity Summit, coordinates planning and marketing including managing vendors to develop branding and promotional assets; liaising with ACC’s Meetings Team to plan and execute Summit promotion and logistics; developing an agenda; and identifying speakers. Advises Division leadership on key decisions.
■ Leads planning and development of conference sponsorships including, designing breakout sessions, producing marketing materials, and providing on-site support.
■ Identifies events, partnerships and activities to position the Division as thought leaders on key areas of sustainability. Oversees and executes development of materials for high-visibility opportunities attended/sponsored by the Plastics Sustainability Team.
■ Develops core communications and external marketing materials for a variety of highly visible sustainability projects (i.e., writing, messaging, document design, fact sheets, graphics, web articles, social promotion, press releases, talking points, letters to the editor, op-eds, etc.)
■ Supports content development and marketing to ensure sustainability and technical content on the Division’s websites (i.e., plasticmakers.org, americanchemistry.com) is regularly updated and contains accurate, compelling and persuasive information.
■ Oversees and executes a variety of special projects as needed.
■ Oversees development of highly-visible content on sustainability topics including advanced recycling for Division’s national Plastics Reputation Initiative.
■ Identifies and mobilizes third-party experts (i.e., scientists, recyclers, engineers, waste management professionals, etc.) to deliver messages in appropriate forums (media, conferences, digital/social media, etc.)
■ Manages vendor relationships, project scopes, contracts, budgets.
■ Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
Required
■ Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (communications, language studies, marketing, public relations, public policy).
■ Five years related experience with business, trade, political or policy advocacy.
■ Strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to write creatively and communicate technical information.
■ Knowledge of industry best practices and current and emerging technologies, trends, and approaches used to propagate messaging that resonates with targeted audiences.
■ Proven ability to work under pressure, against tight deadlines, and in situations requiring rapid turnaround.
■ Ability to convene, direct and advise colleagues, including senior colleagues, on key issues.
■ Conference marketing, both promoting organizational conferences and marketing thought leaders and content at sponsored events.
■ Experience managing social media and digital content management platforms, online targeting, and engaging with stakeholders.
■ Demonstrated ability to process technical and abstract verbal and written information.
■ Demonstrated ability to work autonomously to manage multiple projects and relationships, prioritize competing tasks/demands, and meet deadlines in a team environment.
■ Ability to use independent judgement in evaluating situations/issues.
■ Working knowledge and demonstrated ability to work effectively in Microsoft Office, internet research applications, media monitoring software, and press/media/newswire services.
Preferred
■ Trade association experience.
■ Communications/public relations experience.
