Search underway for the Associate Executive Director (AED) – Public Affairs for the Washington, DC office of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), headquartered in Dallas, TX. ACEP represents more than 34,000 emergency physicians, residents and medical students, promotes the highest quality of emergency care and is the leading advocate is the leading advocate for emergency physicians and their patients.

The AED is responsible for the monitoring and analysis of federal legislative and regulatory activities; providing advocacy leadership for ACEP’s positions on issues to legislators, regulators, staff at the federal government level, and to the media; establishing and maintaining good liaison relationships with members of Congress and their staff, The White House, key staff in regulatory and other agencies and other medical specialty societies; directing the preparation of statements, testimony, media placements, position papers, and model legislation/regulations to support the implementation of approved policy; overseeing administration and growth of NEMPAC and political education activities at ACEP; working effectively with outside lobbying firms, political action committees, and other consultants; conducting robust and effective public relations and media advocacy efforts; managing the annual Leadership & Advocacy Conference (LAC); supporting committees, task forces, and sections as assigned; helping ensure effective communication of information and management of priorities between Washington, DC, and Dallas offices; attending, participating in and presenting to ACEP Board of Directors, Council, and Committee meetings; serving as a member of the Senior Management Team overseeing budgeting of the Public Affairs Line of Service, and actively participating in the overall budget and strategic planning of ACEP.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree (Advanced degree preferred) and 7-10 years’ supervisory experience in federal government affairs involving policy development and advocacy, including any high-level volunteer experience, experience in advocacy with the legislative, executive, and regulatory branches in regard to oversight of healthcare or health-related legislation, experience working with outside lobbying firms and consultants, experience with budgeting and strategic planning, excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, and experience managing volunteers. Association management experience, preferably with a medical association or organization in the healthcare field and understanding of emergency medicine, hospital-based care, and hospitals is preferred. The ideal candidate is a politically sensitive leader with good strategic vision and thinking.
