The American Bus Association (ABA), a leading transportation trade association, is seeking an Associate to support its legislative and communications activities.


Headquartered in Washington, D.C., ABA is the leading trade group representing the motorcoach, travel and tour industry in North America. ABA’s members, numbering nearly 4,000, include: private bus companies; tour operators; travel agents; motorcoach manufacturers; suppliers of products to the motorcoach industry; travel businesses; and those properties, destinations and attractions interested in expanding their group travel business.

The Associate for Legislation & Communications would support both the Government Affairs & Policy Division and the Communications & Media Relations Office of ABA, which align to promote the Association’s goals. The position reports directly to the Vice President of Government Affairs in coordination with the Director of Communications and Media Relations, and collaborates with other ABA Divisions, including: Meetings, Education and Member Services, and the ABA Foundation.

Position Summary:

The Associate for Legislation & Communications operates in a fast-paced, dynamic association environment, with routine deadlines and competing assignments. This position is responsible for managing content for ABA’s daily and weekly publications, tracking legislation and supporting legislative initiatives, managing aspects of ABA’s website, and preparing and filing routine reports. Additionally, the position will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Association’s political action committee.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 or more years’ experience with Federal Government activities, either legislative or in communications, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. As well, the candidate must have strong written and oral communications skills, demonstrating attention to detail. The candidate must also be task oriented, energetic and demonstrate an interest in professional development. Knowledge and experience with basic office software is essential, and preference will be given to candidates with experience in web-based content publishing. Also, knowledge or experience with PAC operations, is a plus. In general, the candidate must also have the ability to collaboratively engage with ABA members, employees, government officials, the media, and the public. Specific Skills Requirements:

• Detail oriented

• Proven oral and written competency

• 2+ years federal legislative experience

• Interest in political action committees; experience a plus

• Familiarity with communications, legislative and PAC software

• Experience with basic office software, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint

• Experience with web-based content publishing

• Experience with social media resources

• Knowledge of AP Style a plus

• Creativity, curiosity, a broad range of knowledge, self-motivation, perseverance and tact.

• Ability to concentrate and manage multiple, and at times conflicting deadlines.
