The Communications team is a key strategic partner in Democracy Fund’s work to create an inclusive, multiracial democracy. The team is focused on developing new lines of work and refreshing external strategies to meet the needs of a robust new organizational strategic framework. The new framework is built, in part, on a strong reputation in philanthropy and deep external relationships within the field.

Democracy Fund is seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Communications Associate to join our growing Communications team. Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Associate will work closely with Democracy Fund’s Communications and Program teams to enhance our influence with target audiences. In addition to having a deep passion for improving our democracy, the successful candidate will be self-motivated, highly collaborative, creative, and eager to work across a variety of communications channels.

This position requires exceptional writing skills and proven experience managing high-impact issue or advocacy campaigns. The ideal candidate will have direct experience working across departments in advocacy, private-sector, political, or philanthropic ventures; be energized by strategic communications; and bring a resourceful, action-orientation to the position.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

PROJECT SUPPORT AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS

  • In close collaboration with the Communications team, drive execution of program communications strategies, including managing a program communications calendar, developing content, and aligning activities across the organization.
  • Assist in media relations and in the management of overall reputation/image among relevant policy, research, and stakeholder communities.
  • Coordinate and provide writing and editing for a variety of editorial and promotional products.
  • With program teams, manage execution of events and sponsorships, including grantee convenings, sponsorship events, and other opportunities to engage the program’s network.
  • Track and report on program communications metrics and progress.
  • Complete other communications projects and duties, as requested by the Communications Manager.

  • Work effectively with staff at all levels and across the organization, balancing projects and priorities for multiple team members.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

  • Passion for strengthening and building a multiracial democracy.
  • Deep commitment to racial equity and justice.
  • A minimum of three to five years in strategic communications with experience in multidisciplinary communications functions, including content development, strategy, messaging, social media, public relations, and/or government affairs. Capitol Hill, campaign, or public affairs agency experience welcomed but not required.
  • A self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who enjoys crafting and implementing new insights while working with others.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex topics, spot opportunities, and stay ahead of communication trends.
  • A high level of integrity that embodies and reflects Democracy Fund values.

Democracy Fund follows a hybrid remote and in-the-office model, which enables flexibility and meets collaboration needs. New staff are expected to reside in the DMV, though exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis by the Personnel Committee. All employees, regardless of location, will be expected in the office several days a month.

SALARY

Salary range begins at $76,486.50 per year.
