The Congress for the New Urbanism, the keystone organization of the New Urbanism movement, seeks a communications coordinator with a proven track record of pinpointing and telling the stories of how enduring, holistic, and people-centered places are vibrant, inclusive, and prosperous. The CNU Communications Coordinator is responsible for telling the stories, framing the messages, and communicating to internal (CNU members) and external (general public) audiences.

Organization: The Congress for the New Urbanism’s (CNU) mission is to champion walkable urbanism. We provide resources, education, and technical assistance to create socially just, economically robust, environmentally resilient, and people centered places. We leverage New Urbanism’s unique integration of design and social principle to advance three key goals: to diversify neighborhoods, to design for climate change, and to legalize walkable places. Summary: CNU, and the country, is at a crossroads. The social, economic, and health impacts of 2020 have forced us to reexamine how we operate, communicate, and serve both our membership and our mission. CNU is currently searching for a Communications Coordinator* who is not afraid to roll up his/her sleeves and dive into the work. The ideal candidate will possess some, if not all, of the following qualities:

  • Strong interest in, and understanding of, New Urbanism, city building, and placemaking;
  • Exceptional writer, editor, and verbal communicator across a broad range of platforms;
  • Self-starter who is comfortable working independently and in small teams;
  • Highly organized and able to manage competing priorities, tasks, and deadlines;

The responsibilities of the Communications Coordinator are varied and diverse. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Messaging and content production: Draft and edit written content for CNU communication channels that promotes and details CNU’s work, and our position in the broader placemaking movement. Content may include:
    1. Press releases and news items
    2. Social media posts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram)
    3. Emails to internal and external audiences
    4. Membership and fundraising messaging
    5. Long form articles for Public Square or Medium
    6. Reports and manuals
  2. Social media management: Monitor the broader placemaking movement activities on social media and position CNU appropriately.
    1. Develop and direct CNU’s online voice
    2. Foster relationships with like-minded organizations and individuals through online engagement and reciprocity
  3. Strategic communications: Collaborate with CNU staff to develop strategic communications priorities and position CNU programmatic and organization initiatives and their products (e.g. reports, manuals, events).
    1. Engage in strategic communications discussion and planning
    2. Lead execution of strategic communication projects
    3. Monitor, measure, and report impact
  4. Media coordination: monitor media coverage of CNU, New Urbanism, and the CEO.
    1. Track and report coverage on a quarterly basis
    2. Coordinate promotion and organization’s response with CNU staff and CEO.
  5. Broaden and strengthen CNU’s brand: collaborate with staff to:
    1. Identify and uplift new voices
    2. Tell deeper stories

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university; or a level of education that, together with experience and training demonstrates the required knowledge skills and abilities.
  • A proven track record (at least 3 years) of successful communications strategies and messages in a related field.
  • Experience working in and with diverse communities, stakeholders, and perspectives.
  • Experience with a non-profit is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with web design, management, and development a plus, but not required.
  • Mac Computer and software proficiency, including MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Drupal, WordPress, basic HTML, etc.
  • Knowledge of email marketing software such as MailChimp.
  • Familiarity with productivity and workflow management tools like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Slack/Asana collaboration tools also a plus.

The following is a list of CNU communications priorities for the next 6 months. While this work will not fall solely to the CNU Communications Coordinator, he/she will play a key role in the execution and success of each.

  1. Distribute and promote CNU Project for Code Reform products
    1. AARP
    2. Vermont
    3. Michigan
  2. Launch and close CNU’s call for Ideas for CNU 29
  3. Launch and close CNU’s call for Freeways without Futures report
  4. Publicize and promote NU Future Report and 2020 Strategic Plan
  5. Draft and edit Freeways without Futures report
  6. Conduct outreach and engagement around the federal Highways to Boulevards pilot program
  7. Conduct end of year member and fundraising drives

* Due to current economic uncertainties, CNU is looking for candidates who are willing to sign a 6-month contract with CNU. Assuming that at the conclusion of this time period all contract obligations have been met and CNU is in a financial position to do so, the candidate would be offered full-time employment at a competitive salary with full benefits, including, but not limited to: medical, dental, and life insurance; a 401k plan with employer contributions; and generous holiday and paid time off.
