Founded in 1966, UPROSE is an intergenerational, BIWOC-led, internationally recognized community organization working at the intersection of racial justice and climate change through community-based planning and research, policy advocacy, popular education, organizing, artistic expression, and youth leadership development.

The Communications Director will have a deep understanding and analysis of the climate justice movement, and develop a knowledge of UPROSE’s communications needs and strengths to inform a robust communications plan that helps us achieve mission impact, grow our influence and funding, and advance movement narratives for a just transition to a regenerative economy.

UPROSE is looking for someone who can work in-person full-time Monday-Friday in our Sunset Park, Brooklyn office.   • Report directly to Executive Director and work with management team;
  • Write and develop content tailored to the specific medium and audience requirements, and manage the process to deliver on all aspects of creative content development
  • Build relationships with key reporters, bloggers, artists and allies; pitch stories, provide original op-eds, presentations and proposals for optimum advocacy and rapid response across all platforms, including digital and earned media, publications, and events;
  • Manage organizational social media platforms & website content on SquareSpace;
  • Create & coordinate content for monthly E-blasts with Constant Contact;
  • Produce creative, effective visual materials, including content that tells compelling stories about the work of UPROSE to influence various stakeholders including policy-makers, funders, other organizations in the climate movement, and media outlets;

Job requirements:

  • Minimum 3-7 years of relevant work experience;
  • Preferred but not required BA in related field or equivalent work experience in communications, advocacy and social justice organizing;
  • Commitment and demonstrated practice to racial, gender, economic and climate justice;
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team-setting;
  • Confident and mature communicator. Strong written, oral communication, and presentation skills including newsletters, social content, and internal presentations;
  • Skilled in Google suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office, Zoom, Canva, Adobe applications;
  • Proactive, accountable, and easy to work with;
  • Spanish or Chinese bilingual proficiency preferred;
  • Sense of humor!

Salary based on experience: $65,000-$75,000
