Communications Director

Reporting to the CEO and president and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, the Director of Communications will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Potomac Institute’s communication strategy. The Director of Communications will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership.

This individual will utilize their network, connections, and experience to enhance the Institute’s strategic communications goals. The goal is to advance the Institute’s position with relevant constituents as well as to drive broader awareness and support for the Institute. The Director of Communications will be responsible for the Institute’s varied and integrated communications products and services including quarterly magazine, monthly “Inside the Institute”, all announcements relative to conferences, workshops, reports, book releases and press releases. The Director of Communications will also be responsible for managing the Institute’s website, social media posting, marketing and media/public relations announcements.



  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the Institute’s mission and goals. Increase strategic awareness of the Institute’s programs and priorities across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Create marketing/public relations strategies that will the Institute’s leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Oversee and develop all the Institute’s print communications including the annual report, quarterly magazine, Inside the Institute, press releases, social media postings, and marketing collateral materials; manage and cultivate relationships with associated media vendors, print and electronic.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and leader point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the strategic vision of the Institute.
  • Exercise judgement to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed.
  • Actively engage, cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure strategic coverage surrounding the Institute’s programs, special events, public announcements and other projects.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Serve as communications counselor to the Institute’s leadership.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development.


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in a senior management role either in-house or with an agency.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships, and utilizing past relationships with top tier reporters, editors, and media outlets to successfully position subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
  • Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized to enhance strategic plans
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
  • Excellent judgement and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiating and conflict resolution skills
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance, and administration initiatives
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, the Institute’s Board of Directors and Senior Fellows
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker
