JOB DESCRIPTION

The Communications Director will be responsible for leading the press and media operations, developing and engaging the media, communicating the mission of College to Congress, and public relations strategy to promote our robust and growing program. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, creative, passionate, and experienced professional who can bring sophisticated media relations and marketing strategies together to manage multiple concurrent projects and initiatives. Ideally, you are experienced in public relations, rapid response, earned media strategy, branding, digital media outreach, and project management.

REPORTS TO

Chief Operating Officer, works closely with the CEO

KEY DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS

The Communications Director will focus on developing and implementing new ways to package and disseminate our work and our brand. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy that helps the organization achieve its mission and advocacy efforts

  • Cultivating and maintaining contact with key reporters in Washington, DC and in regional media outlets around the country

  • Managing media relationships and speaking on the record to media outlets on behalf of the organization

  • Optimizing media opportunities to insert the brand’s POV and drive narratives in the press

  • Booking the CEO on television, radio, etc.

  • Writing press releases, op-eds, social media and e-newsletter content, and other materials

  • Building and maintaining an event and speaking engagement calendar

  • Working collaboratively with the other departments to oversee the financial development, distribution and maintenance of quality content

  • Developing new ways to disseminate information and reach a broader audience (e.g., YouTube videos, infographics, podcasts, newsletters)

  • Executing communications training for interns and alumni as part of the organization’s

Leadership Series

  • Overseeing website maintenance and keeping website content current as well as social channels

  • Working with the Development team to grow our email list and donor base through targeted digital campaigns

REQUIREMENTS

  • 4+ years of Capitol Hill or equivalent professional organization communications experience

  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to turn projects around on tight deadlines

  • Understanding of legislative process and depth of knowledge of congressional testimonies

  • Experience pitching stories, cultivating reporter relationships, speaking on the record, writing op-eds, developing talking points, and conducting interview preparation

  • Experience managing and growing multiple social media channels

  • Demonstrated understanding of media relations with exceptional verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work well in fast-paced environments and prioritize a varied workload, with the flexibility to adapt to the needs of the CEO, staff, media, and program interns

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and creatively when developing new campaigns

SALARY AND BENEFITS

We offer a competitive salary between $70,000-$80,000 experience pending, along with 100% employer-sponsored health benefits, retirement benefits, and a flexible vacation package.
