Phi Beta Kappa’s national office is seeking a dynamic, creative, and collaborative individual who will work with senior leadership and program staff to amplify the vision, mission, and values of the Society, as well as determine the appropriate methods to communicate these priorities with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. Key audiences include, for example, prospective members on campuses, members building professional and personal networks, and committed advocates for the arts, humanities, and sciences in public life.
Collaborating across PBK programs and publications, the Communications Manager is responsible for developing, editing, and posting compelling content distributed via social media, websites, newsletters, press releases, and other distribution channels. The Communications Manager identifies targeted press and marketing opportunities for the organization while ensuring that messages align with key organizational strategies and nonprofit communications best practices.
The Society’s strategic plan emphasizes our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and the Communications Manager plays an important role in furthering these goals, as the Society continues to develop practices and policies centered on inclusive excellence.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and implement a multi-channel communications content strategy across the Society’s social media, monthly newsletter, website, press room, and other distribution channels to ensure that Society communications facilitate member engagement, provide high‐quality and up‐to‐date content, and are organized intuitively;
- Provide ongoing communications support across the organization to include all manner of collateral design, content creation, editorial consistency, and effective distribution;
- Partner closely with colleagues across departments to build the organization’s capacity to use data to inform digital engagement strategies;
- Promote organizational values and use them as a lens for decision-making and action, especially with Society’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Assist organization leaders with crafting internal and external messaging, narratives, and press materials;
- Identify key opportunities to position senior leadership team as thought-leaders;
- Act as the primary point of contact for media queries and facilitate rapid communication response when required;
- Analyze web, social, and newsletter metrics to measure communications impact on organizational goals;
- Foster teamwork, collaboration, and learning while contributing to a positive work environment
- Develop annual budget for communications activities in collaboration with the COO; and
- Supervise/mentor Phi Beta Kappa interns and serve as a resource to chapters and associations on social media and communications best practices.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit, membership, or higher education communications.
- Exceptional written communication skills with adaptable style for different audiences (e.g., newsletters, social media, speechwriting) along with a keen eye for proofreading and editing.
- Superb verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to listen, engage, and persuade internal and external stakeholders at all levels from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent eye for branding and visual design, along with an ability to collaborate with information technology staff, vendors, and design consultants as needed. With design for example, the communications manager would be responsible for creating social media visuals but could expect to retain outside design support for program logos.
- Strong comfort with and fluency in technology platforms including all major social media platforms, Microsoft Office, CRM database, Google Analytics, print/web publishing; familiarity with IMIS database, Kentico, Adobe Creative Suite, and CANVA experience a significant plus.
- Masterful multi‐tasker with attention to detail and a proven track record of simultaneously organizing, prioritizing, and managing complex projects.
- Strong member service orientation with the ability to maintain diplomacy and negotiate successfully at all levels of management.
- A bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts and sciences required, with Phi Beta Kappa membership preferred but not required.
- A passion for the liberal arts and sciences, combined with a keen interest in news, books, culture, and politics.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated salary is in the mid-$70,000’s, depending upon experience. The position is currently remote but will be in person in our Washington, DC office as COVID allows and will report to the Associate Secretary/Chief Operating Officer. Covid-19 vaccination is required.
