The Communications Manager provides important internal and external support for O4D working directly with the Executive Director and other key program staff, including managing O4D’s external press and media work; spearheading O4D’s social media activities; helping steward the organization’s brand; steering O4D email and website strategies; and otherwise supporting efforts to recruit and engage a growing O4D Pledger community.

The Manager will report to the Executive Director and work closely with O4D’s current communications consultant.

The ideal candidate enjoys collaboration and is also a solutions-oriented self-starter, and comfortable with being in a start-up organization. The position is remote and can be based anywhere in the United States, with limited travel. If located in the New York City metro area, office space and other supports are available in-kind from O4D’s founding partner, Galaxy Labs.


  • Press and Media Communications – Help devise a media strategy to build O4D’s brand and visibility; draft press releases, op-eds, and other written pieces; build relationships with key reporters and news media figures; and run press events as necessary.
  • Social Media Efforts – Manage O4D’s social media work (on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook); use social media effectively to build engagement with external partners and influencers; and also build internal community and engagement amongst O4D’s base of pledgers.
  • Brand Stewardship – Work with O4D leadership to build and refine O4D’s brand, style, and key talking points to effectively build out its Pledger base and gain visibility/credibility.
  • Website & Email Efforts – Steer O4D’s strategies around email and web communication, drafting emails and newsletters to our mailing list; write website, implement changes and head the website redevelopment project;
  • Organizational Materials & Reports – Help draft and develop O4D external-facing written documents, including overview materials, slide decks, annual reports, and other materials as necessary.   


  • A commitment to the values of a vibrant and inclusive democracy, including a strong labor movement, environmental protection, racial justice & immigrant advocacy, and LGBTQ, human and civil rights.
  • Demonstrated expertise in written communications and excellent writing ability, including writing high-quality external communications documents such as email newsletters, op-eds, and narrative documents.
  • Expertise in visual design – developing or overseeing the creation of logos, graphics, and other visual elements – is preferred.
  • Experience in building social media presence and a base, increasing engagement with followers, and creating robust community dynamics within a target population.
  • Experience in managing multiple tasks effectively in a rapidly-changing environment with several leaders and organizations.
  • Ability to work with leaders, staff, and members at all levels of organizations and across diverse ideological backgrounds and identities
  • Sense of humor, creativity, patience, and entrepreneurial energy.
