Western Resource Advocates (WRA) is seeking a passionate and motivated Communications Manager to support communications efforts and strategy across the organization and its programs. The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications and is an integral part of the Marketing and Communications Team that works to uphold the organizational brand while increasing WRA’s ability to influence decision makers, donors, partners, reporters, and others to accomplish the organization’s mission and objectives.
The Communications Manager is primarily responsible for guiding and executing a broad range of public relations activities targeted to key audiences across WRA’s programs and states that advance specific organizational and programmatic priorities. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated strategic thinker who possesses sound judgment and strong decision-making skills. This position offers an excellent chance to work with other communications and conservation experts, with opportunities for professional growth and expanding knowledge of environmental issues and evidence-based solutions to combating climate change.
The position can work remotely from either New Mexico or Nevada specifically, or can be based in WRA’s Santa Fe or Carson City offices; or a hybrid of the two. WRA employees are encouraged to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some occasional travel within WRA’s region will be required for collaboration with WRA staff and stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
- Work closely with program and Government Affairs staff to develop and execute communications campaigns related to specific WRA priorities, and utilize communications strategies and tactics to achieve policy and advocacy objectives.
- Create targeted communications materials, including messaging, press releases, and op-eds in coordination with staff to shape narratives, influence decision makers, and advance policy priorities.
- Work collaboratively with partnering organizations and coalitions throughout the region to shape and implement successful shared strategies.
- Act as a WRA brand ambassador internally and externally to educate staff and create buy in around the brand’s importance and the organization’s overall marketing and communications efforts.
- Collaborate with marketing staff to support the development of messaging in digital communications, such as blogs, emails and advocacy actions, as well as print collateral around specific priorities.
- Support program and Government Affairs staff with developing talking points, fact sheets, public comments, articles for publication, grant materials, and other content, as requested.
- Support the President and Development team with storytelling and donor communications efforts, as requested.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key reporters across WRA’s states and keep up-to-date media lists.
- Facilitate earned media opportunities in collaboration with program staff and provide interview coaching, messaging guidance, and logistics support, when needed.
- Contribute story ideas, opportunities, ideas, content, and feedback that illustrate the impact of WRA’s work for broader marketing and communication efforts.
- Travel throughout the region and to regional offices for meetings, conferences, retreats and reporter meetings. (10%)
EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE
- Demonstrated success using a variety of communications strategies and tactics to persuade and influence diverse audiences on complex subjects.
- Experience producing compelling content and collateral, including press releases, op-eds, messaging, and web content to educate and influence target audiences.
- Highly skilled and experienced writer capable of breaking down complex subjects into simple terms that are understandable and compelling for media, donors, partners and decision makers.
- Expertise in working with media to shape productive narratives aligned with programmatic goals.
COMMUNICATION & RELATIONSHIP CULTIVATION
- Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate articulately, persuasively, and effectively with varied audiences.
- Aptitude for translating complicated technical concepts into accessible written and spoken content.
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated success in garnering earned media coverage and cultivating long-lasting relationships with journalists.
- Experience working effectively and diplomatically with coalitions and partner organizations to advance shared objectives.
- Experience creating and executing successful communications plans and advocacy campaigns across an organization and with coalitions.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with excellent attention to detail and follow through.
- Ability to stay nimble and organized while managing multiple projects and competing priorities.
- Driven, highly motivated self-starter.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $50,000-$65,000 annually; salary depends on relevant experience and new staff rarely start at the top of the range. WRA’s excellent benefits package includes health, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k)-retirement plan, life & disability insurance, 3 weeks paid vacation leave, sick leave, parental leave, and sabbatical leave after five years. WRA’s offices are closed December 25 – January 1 for Winter Break. Position is full-time exempt.
