The Communications Manager works with trade, local, national, BIPOC and other focused press to advance the organization’s mission. This role serves as an institutional writer and editor, ensuring consistent and inclusive messaging in all communications materials as well as curating content for the Ford’s Theatre blog. Working closely with the Marketing and Social Media Manager, this position develops content and implements the organization’s communications and marketing strategy under the direction of the Director of Communications and Marketing. Providing support across various priorities related to marketing, the Communications Manager will fulfill internal and external requests as directed. 


All Ford’s Theatre Society employees are required to actively participate in the Society’s ongoing efforts to become an anti-racist organization. These efforts include staff-wide conversations, new programming, development of new resources for staff and audiences, and an expectation that all staff will keep themselves informed of resources and trends in the field of anti-racism and DEAI and how they can be applied to their own work on a day-to-day basis.


Principal Responsibilities:

Press Relations (approximately 50% of time)

  • Draft and edit press releases, media alerts, fact sheets and all related press materials; maintain and update all press lists in real time
  • Manage press attendance as well as photography and videography needs at special events, tours and performances
  • Formulate and execute public relations initiatives by pitching various media targets
  • Establish, develop and maintain effective relationships with key media 
  • Maintain organization’s archive of press clippings, institutional b-roll and photographs
  • Conceptualize, organize and supervise photo and video sessions for public relations, marketing and archival purposes
  • Support crisis communications needs as they arise 
  • Manage media inquiries regarding filming and/or interviews at the National Historic Site 


Communications (approximately 40% of time)

  • Draft, review and edit all materials for external audiences (print publications, emails and website copy) and provide support in coordinating communications calendars
  • Maintain and update style guide for the institution as needed
  • Serve as publications manager for production and event programs, managing content, deadlines and circulation


Other (10% of time)

  • Track department budget, submit invoices for payment and log expenses
  • Serve as staff liaison to TheatreWashington 
  • Other duties as assigned



A growth mindset is required for success in this role to find innovative ways to drive our targeted outreach, cultivate audience retention, and build on the Ford’s brand. A strategic thinker with an eye for problem solving is required of the Communications Manager. 


The Communications Manager will have at least 3 years of communications/marketing experience, covering areas such as press relations, institutional communications, marketing, branding and social media. The position requires the ability to take information and transform it into exciting, relevant and useful messaging, and to disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels. The position requires someone highly collaborative, able to work well across all departments in a productive and team-spirited way.



BA in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, other related field, or proven and verifiable equivalent experience.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of D.C. arts and culture media 
  • Experience with arts-related organization preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, YouTube, WordPress; ability to synthesize data from various platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, critical thinking and strong interpersonal skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Knowledge of social media and familiarity with social media best practices in the nonprofit sector 
  • Self-starter able to work independently

Salary: $57,000 per year
