We work to build the power of women of color across our nation through She the People, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit initiative, together with She the People/Storied, our 501(c)3 nonprofit sister project. About the Role

She the People is seeking an experienced communications professional who is passionate about storytelling and brand management and thrives working behind-the-scenes. You are committed to elevating, amplifying, and activating the power of women of color in our nation, and will work in close partnership with the Founder & President to promote the organization’s voice and national presence. You believe that words matter and have an impact on our communities. You are an advocate for using precise language to shape a narrative and a talent for executing copy with a short turnaround. You are organized, detail-oriented, and collaborative. The Communications Manager/Director will report to the Chief of Staff and will manage project-based consultants, vendors, and contractors as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy & Management (15%)

  • Create and lead a comprehensive communications strategy and budget for both the 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 to expand the organizations’ national presence and promote our mission
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to ensure messaging is action-oriented and aligns with the organizing strategy of both the 501(c)3 and 501(4) organization
  • Leverage the Founder & CEO as a spokesperson for the organization and movement
  • Manage vendors and contractors as needed
  • Manage the CRM & CMS vendor

Content Creation & Writing (50%)

  • Develop and manage the content creation and approval process
  • Generate reports, talking points, and other collateral from the organizations’ original data and research findings
  • Support the Founder & CEO to serve as the spokesperson for the movement through media interview talking points, speeches, op-eds, and other collateral
  • Generate content for fundraising and donor communications in collaboration with fundraising staff and the Chief of Staff
  • Collaborate with the Program & Political Director to develop content to share success stories and build the narrative around the organizations’ mission and movement

Branding & Marketing (20%)

  • In collaboration with senior staff, develop and direct the organizations’ brand identity and communications standards
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure all collateral and communications pieces promote the voice of both organizations
  • Create and maintain a style guide and talking points to capture the Founder & CEO’s voice and vision for the organizations

Digital Marketing & Database Management (20%)

  • Manage the organizations’ social media presences, including the website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and other strategic platforms
  • Review and approve social and digital content, including copy and design
  • Manage the email content strategy and work collaboratively with senior staff to support database management and list segmentation
  • Collaborate with staff to report on social media performance metrics to ensure all platforms are optimized and working congruently
  • Monitor for relevant trends in the digital space, as well as social media and influencer marketing opportunities

Public Relations & Marketing (5%)

  • Supported by the PR & marketing consultant, manage incoming media requests for the President & CEO

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Commitment to She the People’s values of love, justice, and belonging and a mission to build the power of women of color to achieve racial justice and gender justice
  • Minimum 4-8 years relevant communications experience, which can include copy writing & editing, blogging, op-eds, research & report writing, digital marketing, brand management, and CRM/CMS management. Experience in political communications is a bonus.
  • Understanding and experience messaging within the limits of both a 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 nonprofit organization
  • Experience crafting action-oriented messaging to facilitate movement building and grassroots organizing
  • Strong people management and intrapersonal skills, specifically experience managing both staff and consultants
  • Ability to communicate effectively with partners, elected officials, and candidates
  • Results-focused with impeccable follow-through
  • Ability and willingness to travel (<20%) for events and in-person team collaborations

Salary Range: $75-95k (Manager) 95-115K (Director)
