The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has an exciting opportunity for a Communications Officer to join our Office of Communications. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Communications Officer will serve dual roles of supporting media relations and daily social media management for the Office of Communications to extend the reach and thought leadership of AAAS. The Communications Officer will also serve as core support staff across the team, which includes monitoring, research, and administrative duties.

What You’ll Do

  • Support media relations for Office of Communications initiatives and select AAAS programs and meetings, including drafting and distributing statements, press releases and other materials
  • Maintain media lists and build relationships with reporters
  • Draft and schedule social media content across Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram
  • Support paid media campaign development and execution
  • Monitor and moderate comments on social media platforms, as well as support social media live discussions in collaboration with the Social Media Director
  • Compile daily media and social media monitoring reports and conduct ongoing social listening
  • Collect and package up digital, social and media analytics for bi-weekly and quarterly reports
  • Support crisis communications activities as appropriate
  • Conduct media and social media audits and support research assignments as needed
  • Handle administrative and project management duties for the Office of Communications
  • Support other communications duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years of experience conducting media relations and crafting social media content
  • Experience using monitoring platforms and social media management tools
  • Familiarity and some experience executing paid media campaigns is preferred
  • Program management experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal, writing, and editing
  • Ability to write concise social media content that is compelling and approachable
  • Understanding of effective methods to disseminate news and engage with reporters and editors
  • Knowledge of the evolving media and social media landscapes
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects at once
  • Collaborative spirit who enjoys working with colleagues toward a unified vision
  • Self-starter that can work independently and entrepreneurially
