Communications and Outreach Specialist

 

Macfadden, a PAE company, is seeking a Communications and Outreach Specialist to support USAID’s Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad. ASHA provides assistance to schools, libraries, and medical centers outside the U.S. that serve as study and demonstration centers for American ideas and practices. ASHA’s awards help these institutions train future leaders in a wide variety of disciplines, support local and regional infrastructure to foster development, and cultivate positive relationships among citizens of the U.S. and other nations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Communications and Outreach professional will apply knowledge of communications tactics, techniques, and strategies necessary to support the Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA).  The duties are as such:

  • Supports a variety of outreach and public affairs, and strategic communications functions, including developing communications materials for executive level staff and the Hill. Materials development includes weekly and monthly reports for senior political leaders, position papers, invitations, articles, web copy, speeches, talking points, and Q&A documents.
  • Provides advice and communication information to the ASHA on external communication activities; including reviewing branding and marking submissions to ensure compliance with USAID policies.
  • Plan and execute outreach/communication strategy and international communication initiatives;
  • Research, review and analyze written material for objectivity, style, presentation, coherence, sentence structure, grammar, and readability;
  • Ensure that written materials are accurate (fact checking), logically consistent, well organized, and appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Identifying outreach opportunities and audiences and developing key messages and communication materials appropriate for different target audiences;
  • Writing and editing text for various communication vehicles including reports, briefing documents, speeches and fact sheets.
  • Experience with graphic design and layout;
  • Experience with video and photo taking and editing, a plus;
  • Document and disseminate public diplomacy activities and accomplishments while lining them up with USG priorities;
  • Designing communications strategies, policies, and guiding documents and training ASHA staff and partners in how to implement these practices.
  • Prepare all ASHA official communications, briefing materials, and social media content including Newsletters and Bulletins.
  • Prepare and maintain communications materials about ASHA’s program and pre/post award support to applicants.
  • Maintain the ASHA internal and external websites.
  • Coordinate with Bureau communications POC and Bureau and Mission/Embassy Communication POCs as appropriate to ensure materials are available about ASHA programs.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Education: Master’s degree and 6 years of relevant experience or bachelor’s degree and 8 years of relevant experience.

Skills: A successful candidate must have extremely strong writing and editing skills, strong verbal communication skills, a positive attitude, and a good work ethic. S/he must be reliable, must work well on a team, and must be able to work well under time constraints. Computer proficiency is required and must include applied knowledge of standard business applications.

                       

Knowledge of MS Office products required. Knowledge of graphic software such as Adobe Creative Suite or ARC GIS desired.

Experience: Demonstrated experience in developing, managing, or evaluating communication products and strategies. Experience producing, editing and reviewing a range of written, verbal, and article communications materials for different audiences (e.g. brochures, publications, articles, speech building blocks, PowerPoint presentations).

REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must be able to obtain a government security clearance prior to starting work.

Candidate must provide a writing sample with application.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
