We are seeking a Communications Specialist for our Huntsville, Alabama, office to serve as the communications lead for Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Huntsville facility. He/she will be responsible for communicating Aerojet Rocketdyne programs to internal and external audiences. In this capacity, the incumbent will report to the Director of Communications; partner with the Defense Business Unit and company Centers of Excellence (COE’s) to further Aerojet Rocketdyne’s communication goals.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
Under limited general direction, the Communications Specialist determines approach to objectives and projects, demonstrating an understanding and application of communications principles, concepts and practices to meet the objectives of assignments:
75% – Communications. Develop internal and external communications products, such as press releases and newsletter articles, interact with media to answer press queries and prepare company subject matter experts for media engagements. Ensure that communication products accurately reflect Aerojet Rocketdyne’s programs and policies. Interact with the operating divisions, COE’s and site leadership to develop, coordinate and approve communications materials. Assist with analysis to determine the best media approach and methods for various audiences. Assist with management of special projects, VIP visits, community relations and other communications efforts as required.
25% – Community Relations. Support the enterprise communications lead to analyze, plan, and implement site strategies that advance Aerojet Rocketdyne’s Community Relations goals. Use internal and external communications channels to communicate the site’s employee initiatives and community relations activities.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related discipline and ten (10) years of directly related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others; have a keen attention to detail, and communicate effectively. Interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively interface with all levels of personnel, both within the Communications Department and throughout the company.
- Skilled in effective scheduling and prioritizing work flow.
- Ability to analyze data of a confidential and/or sensitive nature.
- Must be flexible enough to fill in where required on demand.
- Ability to drive and possess a valid driver’s license and meet automobile insurability requirements of the company.
- Some travel may be required.
- Background in public relations, community outreach, government affairs and/or English grammar and composition.
- Knowledge of AP Style
- Experienced in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, [others?]
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 15 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
