Job Summary: The Community Organizer will engage in a variety of neighborhood outreach activities that serve to monitor/analyze neighborhood changes, promote local businesses, and help build consensus for neighborhood improvements. Activities include, but are not limited to, attending project related meetings, facilitating neighborhood meetings, door to door outreach, business marketing campaigns, and Chinese/English translation services, and any related project needs.

Status: Full-time, Nonexempt, Regular
Location: Chinatown neighborhood, San Francisco
Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., plus some evenings and weekends
Salary: DOE; Comprehensive benefits

The Organization: A private non-profit founded in 1977, Chinatown Community Development Center believes in a comprehensive vision of community. We own and/or manage approximately 30 affordable housing buildings serving over 3,800 low-income seniors, single adults, formerly homeless adults, and families of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Tenderloin, Western Addition, and Polk Gulch neighborhoods. We also build housing, develop grassroots leadership, and engage low-income residents and youth. General Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular meetings with Chinatown residents, merchants, and other stakeholders to discuss neighborhood projects, plans or proposals to gather input and suggestions
    • Advocate for community voices in city projects, plans, proposal through public comment at City Hall and/or written letters of concern.
  • Work with Planners to provide feedback on various planning projects
  • Track and analyze neighborhood impact, stakeholder issues, and activities through our Salesforce database to understand trends
  • Strategize and work on marketing ideas to revitalize Chinatowns economy through website design, social media, and/or any other media outlet
  • Assist in the SRO Acquisition program with resident outreach
  • Facilitate and plan community meetings with stakeholders
  • Attend meetings as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to speak fluent Cantonese and read and write Chinese and conduct workshops and meetings in English and Cantonese
  • Experience working with low-income immigrant neighborhoods and familiarity with issues relevant to the community
  • Strong, creative and comprehensive problem solving skills
  • Good listening skills and ability to exercise patience
  • Ability to work independently as well as in team structure
  • Commitment to comprehensive vision of community development and improving the life for low-income community

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College graduation
  • Bilingual in Cantonese and English
  • Basic word processing and excel spreadsheet computer skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the San Francisco’s neighborhood
  • Bi-literate in Chinese and English
  • Familiarity with Chinese software program
  • Two (2) years experience in non-profit agency serving low-income clients
  • Ability to speak Mandarin

Condition of Employment

As of January 4th, 2022, All Chinatown Community Development Center employees are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. All new hires must show proof of vaccination status at the time of employment offer. Exemptions will be made for applicants with a valid medical reason or a sincerely held religious belief and must be submitted within a timely requested manner. Additional documentation may be required by CCDC if exemption is approved.
