Consultant: Communication Strategist

JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. (JSI)
Berkeley, CA

DESCRIPTION

JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) is a leading not-for-profit public health and health services consulting organization. The Consultant position is within JSI’s Health Services Division (HSD), dedicated to improving the health of communities and individuals throughout the U.S. We are focused on working toward an equitable health system with equitable health outcomes. Our clients include federal, state, and local government; health systems; foundations; and other private clients working to maximize health.

We pride ourselves on being a workplace where people with a wide variety of lived experiences have the freedom to pursue their passions and take an active part in shaping the future directions of our work. We value a bias toward action: We do research with the explicit intent of influencing policy change and changes in practice and have results to show for it. We truly believe in working collaboratively, internally and with partners, and supporting cross-sector, community-driven work in the field.

Our JSI California team is small and we work closely together: all staff members engage across multiple projects simultaneously with a high-level of individual accountability. We strive to balance rigorous approaches with timely and imaginative execution. We bring an equity lens to our projects and operations and are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team.

Our office culture is strong—we care about each other as professionals and as people. We value work-life balance and are committed to each other’s success and growth. When we can gather in person, we hold weekly lunches; host our partners, friends, and families at the office; and make sure to make time for fun staff outings.

About This Role
Consultants generally work on two to three projects at a time across our broad portfolio of work as well as assist in proposal writing and new business development. Our JSI California portfolio spans a variety of topics, characterized by a commitment to advancing racial and health equity and an emphasis on shaping California healthcare and public health policy. Current topics include Medi-Cal delivery system and payment reform initiatives; multi-sector collaboratives focused on community health and prevention; primary care/behavioral health integration; and strategies to advance health and racial equity.

The critical skills we are seeking are related to communications for public health and health policy topics, including: communication and social media strategy; content writing and copywriting messaging for diverse target audiences from policymakers to consumers; and producing content for a variety of channels. You will work as a member of project teams to develop and implement communication strategies; develop written materials for a range of domestic audiences and modalities; support the evaluation of communication projects through data collection; support executive communications functions; and provide communication-related technical assistance to clients. We expect that you will be able to work collaboratively with team members and be able to lead and follow through on various communication implementation tasks. As part of our JSI California team, you will also actively participate in organizing and assisting business development efforts for new public health-related projects at the local, state, and national levels. As an organization, we are committed internally and externally to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging and are looking for individuals committed to these values.

JSI currently has a hybrid work environment. We prefer that staff work in some capacity from the Berkeley office; however, candidates based in other regions of California will be considered, with exact expectations determined upon hire.
