Overview

The National Grocers Association (NGA) is the national trade association for America’s 21,500 independent community grocers. NGA members include retail and wholesale grocers located in every congressional district across the country, as well as state grocers’ associations, manufacturers, and service suppliers.

The NGA Government Relations (GR) team manages government relations, political activities, member casework, and more. We exclusively lobby on federal issues across a range of policies, including food, nutrition, antitrust, payments, labor and employment, tax, privacy, among others.

Position Summary

NGA is searching for a proactive and politically minded individual to coordinate NGA’s Political Action Committee (PAC), grassroots, and fundraising. The ideal candidate is motivated to build strong relationships with NGA members through personal and phone outreach, driving fundraising for government relations, and grassroots/grasstops initiatives. This role also handles administrative tasks for the team including but not limited to event planning and scheduling. The job is ideal for hungry job seekers making their start in Washington eager to participate in the political and policymaking process.

The coordinator will report to NGA’s Group VP of Government Relations. This position is in-person in Washington, DC with an optional hybrid schedule 2 days/week maximum.

Responsibilities

  • Fundraising for the NGA Grocers PAC and NGA’s legal defense and advocacy funds
  • Work with PAC consultant to manage all PAC related activities including but not limited to fundraising, donations, authorizations, and legal compliance
  • Plan and manage PAC fundraising for political candidates
  • Create PAC fundraising strategy by quarter for political candidates and for driving fundraising growth of NGA’s PAC
  • Coordinate PAC Advisory Committee meetings
  • Present political updates for webinars and meetings
  • Lead administrative efforts of Government Relations team, including maintaining team records, distribution lists, and tracking of NGA membership engagement
  • Write weekly, monthly, and as needed communications and updates for NGA’s membership
  • Manage grassroots activities including grasstops activations, write and send action alerts, store tours, and fly-in scheduling
  • Develop and execute VIP plan for NGA’s top donors
  • Plan and execute logistics for NGA Government Relations team activities at various NGA and industry events (annual trade show, fly-in, conferences, meetings, etc.)
  • Assist with scheduling meetings for the GR team’s lobbyists
  • Respond to emails and requests in a timely fashion
  • Track GR team’s engagement with members of Congress and the Administration
  • Provide research and support on policy issues as needed
  • Support NGA’s members and the association’s overall mission to serve the independent supermarket industry

Skills and Experience

  • Entry-level position, but ideal candidate has internship experience in policy or politics (e.g., political fundraising, campaigns, or Capitol Hill)
  • Willingness to pick up the phone and have conversations with members
  • Self-starter
  • Interest in food and/or retail industry
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Curiosity about and willingness to use existing and new technology
  • Ability to multitask on simultaneous projects
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  • Team player with proven ability to collaborate on other projects
  • Bachelor’s degree required
