Equitable Growth engages with academics and policymakers to better understand economic inequality in the United States and its impact on economic growth. Important elements of Equitable Growth’s mission include in-house, academic-quality research, and grantmaking to academic economists and other social scientists to support new research on inequality, mobility, growth, and related issues. Building a stronger bridge between academics and the policy community and elevating researchers and their work with the news media are both key to our work, with the goal of making new research relevant, accessible, and informative to the policymaking process.

The Deputy Communications Director manages the development and execution of a targeted media relations strategy with national and state-level journalists, building a bridge between academia and policymakers that constructs a new narrative about how the economy works. The Deputy Communications Director also plays a key role assisting the Communications Director with development and execution of an integrated communications strategy across media, digital, and events, as well as helping to ensure the Communications team meets its objectives and key results. The Deputy Communications Director will support and grow the organization’s communications capacity, reach, and effectiveness across its in-house and academic network of experts.

Responsibilities

Media relations

  • Oversee development and execution of media relations strategy to help create new narrative on what makes the economy grow through elevation of Equitable Growth messengers and research
  • Identify opportunities to elevate Equitable Growth Steering Committee, Research Advisory Board, and larger grantee network to media
  • Track and identify economic narratives and shape future coverage by elevating in-house and academic experts to journalists
  • Coach and train Equitable Growth staff for media opportunities, including organizing staff media training(s)
  • Organize media training for grantees at major events and for individual media opportunities
  • Manage development of pitches, press releases to elevate Equitable Growth products (reports, working papers), and contributed pieces for placement in national and regional media outlets
  • Oversee state and regional media relations strategy and execution
  • Oversee preparation of all briefing documents and prep materials for media interviews, including for the President and CEO

Communications strategy and execution

  • Work in partnership with Communications Director to implement overall strategic communications plan
  • Work with Communications Director to develop and refine organizational messaging
  • Own development and implementation of targeted communications plans within Equitable Growth’s policy areas, ensuring maximization of digital opportunities
  • Capitalize on opportunities to elevate staff and academic network in public debates, Equitable Growth-hosted events, and other external opportunities focused on how economic inequality affects economic growth and stability
  • Assist Communications Director in elevating President and CEO’s public profile, including thought leadership and external speaking opportunities, and oversee management of President and CEO’s digital presence

Management

  • Directly supervise Senior Communications Associate in meeting organizational, team, and individual objectives
  • Oversee Communications Assistant’s maintenance of media lists across all program areas, as well as their implementation of quarterly progress reporting toward team objectives and key results

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of communications and media relations experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public policy, economics, political science, or related field
  • Exceptional written and oral communication abilities, with the ability to distill research clearly and in an engaging manner
  • Proven track record of cultivating¬†relationships with reporters and influencers; existing relationships with reporters covering economics a plus
  • Experience with relevant media monitoring tools (e.g.,¬†Cision)
  • Experience leveraging digital tools and platforms to meet communications objectives
  • Knowledge of economics media landscape a plus
  • Experience in economics, public policy, or research-driven organizations a plus
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work on a number of projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or similar data management system preferred; proficiency with basic computer applications (Office Suite and Google Docs) required; willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed
  • Team player, excellent interpersonal skills
