The primary responsibilities of this role, Director Advocacy Relations, are to:

  • Provide senior level strategic advocacy relations support to the leadership of the U.S. pharmaceutical business;
  • Set the strategic direction of and generate and communicate outputs from the U.S. advocacy relations team with a priority on access to medicines and meeting other unmet needs of patient communities;
  • Proactively identify, recommend and execute opportunities for collaboration that support business and reputational objectives within Bayer’s focus therapeutic areas and at the Pharmaceutical division-wide level;
  • Establish new and build on existing external relationships to advance business objectives while meeting the needs of patient communities, particularly as it relates to clinical trial outcomes, access to medicine, and education;
  • Build cross functional strategies and processes with partners in Marketing, Commercial Operations, Legal, Medical Affairs, Managed Markets, and Public Policy, Government Relations and Communications. In particular, develop and execute advocacy relations strategies and initiatives to advance public policy objectives or other key issues in support of key therapeutic areas;
  • Help to foster a patient centric culture at Bayer by advancing efforts to infuse the patient perspective in the daily work and life of Bayer employees;
  • Serve as a visible advocate for patient centricity both internally and externally;
  • Provide effective leadership to elevate the value and performance of Bayer advocacy relations both internally and externally, and promote understanding and appreciation of its value across the organization, particularly among internal key stakeholders;
  • Identify and direct appropriate high-level advocacy engagement activities to enhance the reputation of the president of U.S. pharmaceuticals division and other senior executives in the U.S. pharma organization;
  • Ensure the efficient and appropriate financial management of all advocacy budgets, including spending on third party sponsorships, grants, consultants and other activities related to advocacy relations;
  • Establish systems and processes relating to advocacy decision- making, communications, advocacy metrics and advocacy training to maximize the impact of advocacy relations at Bayer and develop the discipline as a best-in-class industry example;
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other Bayer divisions (i.e., Consumer Health, Crop Science) and with Global counterparts to maximize the impact and efficiency of external stakeholder relationships.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology or related industry, including knoweldge of patient advocacy, strategic stakeholder engagement, and the functions and processes of the U.S. pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry;
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience in developing and implementing advocacy relations or stakeholder engagement strategies to achieve shared objectives between businesses and patient/professional organizations;
  • Solid knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry and issues affecting the marketplace, particularly issues around access to medicines;
  • Knowledge or experience in Bayer therapeutic areas of focus strongly desired (oncology, cardio/pulmonary/renal/metabolic, hematology, women’s health and neurology/MS);
  • Solid knowledge of the current healthcare and regulatory policy environment, trends, and developments affecting Bayer’s pharmaceutical businesses;
  • Understanding and knowledge of national and state legislative and reimbursement environments affecting biopharmaceutical products;
  • Established relationships and a demonstrated ability to develop strong networks with individuals and patient and provider groups that influence public policy and other environmental activities;
  • Ability to lead and accomplish business objectives in a matrix organization, working with all levels of the organization and quickly gain the respect and trust of all with whom he/she interacts;
  • Ability to grasp complex scientific and business topics and to work under pressure and handle several competing priorities concurrently;
  • Proven managerial experience; attention to personnel needs, holding people accountable to performance evaluations, driving team moral, and providing recognition for accomplishments;
  • Ability to think strategically to assimilate complex data and information to efficiently and easily understand how to engage third- party stakeholders to further Bayer’s business interests;
  • Proficient financial skills as they relate to managing substantial budgets;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking;
  • Excellent writing, including internal strategic plans/presentations/memos and reports, and external blogs/articles.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Masters of Public Health, Masters of Health Administration, or Master of Business Administration.
