ABA is seeking a Director, Banking Policy that will contribute to ABA’s regulatory advocacy activities. The incumbent will assist in the development and advocacy of industry positions on issues affecting core banking, including capital, liquidity, resolutions, and balance sheet risk management, the structure, powers, and organization of regulatory agencies.  The incumbent will be expected to summarize complex regulatory initiatives, assist with banker working groups, perform research and analysis to support the development of industry positions and act as a liaison between the banking industry and the financial regulators on matters within the Prudential Regulation and Financial Markets Group’s responsibilities and support ABA’s representation on the International Banking Federation.
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Work closely with ABA members and staff to identify areas of advocacy and develop ABA’s policy positions
  • Understand and engage on regulatory proposals on prudential supervision
  • Work with bank committees and staff experts on the preparation of comment letters and other official communications
  • Coordinate with staff experts and issue leads to consult and advocate with relevant governmental officials and staff on various issues
  • Help articulate – through web-based materials, bulletins, speeches, and other written and oral communications – ABA’s position on key issues
  • Assist in the planning and development of technical meeting and conference programs
  • Prepare memoranda or other briefing materials to keep key stakeholders informed on developing trends and issues in the financial environment
Required Skills: 
  • 6-8 years of related experience 
  • 4-year degree 
  • Has strong interpersonal skills
  • Possesses excellent communication skills (oral and written), and is an effective public speaker
  • Understands the role of associations, and is able to be an effective advocate for the banking industry
  • Strong policy analysis skills, and the ability to develop policy in a collaborative manner
  • Able to work independently and think strategically
  • High proficiency with Microsoft office (Word and PowerPoint)
Preferred Experience: 
  • JD, MBA, or comparable experience preferred
  • Previous employment at a bank, private sector entity involved with financial policy, or government financial policy-making body
  • Familiarity with prudential bank regulation and the Basel III framework
