Director, Civil Society Partnerships
American Forests works with a range of corporate, philanthropic, and public sector partners to deliver on its mission. As a key member of our newly-created Partnerships team, the Director of Civil Society Partnerships will help to deepen and expand AF’s range of nonprofit, academic, and faith-based partners that can help deliver on the organization’s mission and goals, with a special emphasis on tree planting. Reporting to the Chief External Affairs Officer and serving as part of the External Affairs team, the Director of Civil Society Partnerships will play a crucial role in managing and growing these partnerships by focusing on scaling existing relationships with the interfaith community, The Girl Scouts of the USA, and Laudato Trees.
The Director of Civil Society Partnerships is responsible for the following:
1) External Relationship Development and Management (50%):
- Manage a portfolio of relationships with civil-society partners, including but not limited to Girl Scouts of the USA, Laudato Trees, and others, ensuring overall satisfaction, monitoring delivery of partnership activities according to existing or newly-developed partnership agreements, and serving as the go-to external representative of American Forests for specified partners. Research, identify, and initiate relationships with new civil-society organizations or interfaith partners that have mutual interest in and alignment with our mission. Manage partnership communications and interactions by creating a standard cadence for updates, developing regularly-scheduled newsletters and / or other written communications, scheduling check-in calls, and monitoring all AF touchpoints with partners. Represent American Forests externally at meetings, conferences, and events critical to civil society and interfaith partners, conveying our partnership work and joint-mission delivery.
2) Back-End Relationship Tracking and System Oversight (30%)
- Serve as point-person for all back-end partnership needs, including but not limited to drafting scopes of work or memorandums of understanding in collaboration with AF leadership, leading working or check-in calls, tracking AF deliverables and / or programmatic commitments for partners, and working across AF departments to ensure coordination. Help oversee systems and processes to capture, manage, and plan for partnership delivery by maintaining current relationship management system and database, assessing those existing systems, and suggesting changes and / or updates as-needed. Track measures of success for partner agreements as needed, and in coordination with programs team. Work with supervisor to develop systems and processes that work across partnership typologies, including civil society, corporate, academic, and communications partners.
3) Internal Program Delivery and Collaboration (20%)
- Work directly with program, policy, and other colleagues to coordinate partnership delivery, developing detailed plans for tree-planting events, technical assistance and other work detailed in the partnership agreements, tracking progress, and gathering updates to report out in partnership communications. Liaise as needed with AF’s Communications team and Philanthropy team on organization-wide communications and fundraising efforts, where partners and AF’s work intersect. Report out on and flag any potential partnership opportunities or challenges as appropriate with AF leadership in order to maintain best-in-class partner relationships and avoid reputational risk.
DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- 5-7 years of direct, demonstrated experience in relationship development and management in a related area, such as business development, public affairs or political campaign work, or managing the external presence of a brand or initiative.
- History of successfully identifying, securing, and managing relationships, and experience refining and maintaining a system for relationship management.
- A demonstrated ability to proactively identify and cultivate new relationships with large-scale institutions or partners.
- Proven ability to distill highly-complex and technical work in a clear, compelling way to external audiences.
- Excellent project management, logistical, and organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to see global picture while also implement tactics and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven ability to “manage up” and execute independently with concise feedback and direction from manager.
REQUISITE EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree is required and 5-7 years demonstrated experience Working knowledge and experience in the environmental, social justice or climate change fields is preferred. This is a Washington, D.C. based position.
The majority of work will be performed in a general office environment with a partial remote option. The position will likely be fully remote during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Must be comfortable with prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 10-15 pounds at a time.
This is a Washington, D.C. based position.
Infrequent travel outside of Washington, DC. COVID-19 permitting, frequent travel within D.C. to Congressional hearings, etc. Most work will be in a general office environment.
This position does not have any supervisory requirements.
