Who We Are

DC SCORES is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that builds neighborhood teams that give kids in need the skills and confidence to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and in life. Our core programming centers around an innovative, team-based, school-based model that integrates poetry/spoken word, soccer, and service-learning into a cohesive whole-child program, which we deliver through free after school programs and summer camps.

DC SCORES is not just a routine after school program; we are a cross-sector local leader. To ensure maximum opportunities for the youth we serve, DC SCORES actively engages in partnerships with other entities and communities that care about positive youth development, including: the DC arts, athletics, and youth advocacy communities; OSSE, DCPS, and DC Public Charter School administrators and principals; schoolteachers; and elected and appointed government officials.

DC SCORES strives to be an anti-racist organization. We are committed to applying an intersectional approach to equity and advancing the many dimensions of equity in everything we do. With this lens, we are preparing for steady growth over the next five years to meet growing needs in Washington, DC. We have worked with over 25,000 children since our founding in 1994, currently serve nearly 3,000/year, and have a goal of serving 5,000 children/year by 2025.

DC SCORES has been replicated in 11 cities and is part of a collaborative affiliate network, America SCORES, which also is working intentionally to center racial equity throughout the network. More info: What We Do: Our primary focus is on serving children who attend Title I schools. We work hard to maintain a 50/50 ratio of girls and boys in our programs. We currently partner with, and provide programming for, more than 60 public and public charter schools in the District. We do not charge a program fee. All of our programming is 100% free for children and families. Many students who join DC SCORES stay not for a season, but for a lifetime. Moreover, a typical DC SCORES poet-athlete participates in not only one program stream, but in many — often in the same year (e.g. in the same year a student could participate in ES SCORES, Youth W.O.R.D. Project, Winter SCORES, and Summer SCORES). DC SCORES’ poet-athletes also participate in America SCORES’ National Poetry Slams and frequently are invited to perform at public events and corporate gatherings around DC.

About the Position

This position is perfect for a skilled strategic communications professional eager to leave their mark on an award-winning social impact organization. The role is part strategic visionary, part brand cheerleader, part roll-up-the-sleeves-and-get-things-done-in-the-trenches communicator, part client support (for senior management and the Board), part writer, and part communications team leader.

This role is far from a typical desk job. Opportunities, accolades, and new supporters have come hard and fast for DC SCORES over the past five years, and the Director needs to be nimble enough to adapt to different audiences and opportunities while having the ability to align these opportunities in an effective campaign, particularly as we approach our 30th Anniversary in the Fall of 2024. On any given day, you might write a press release for a major event or award, work with the D.C. United communications team or pro bono consultants to storyboard a video showcasing DC SCORES’ impact, secure a speaking role for the Executive Director at a high-profile conference, devise strategy for testimony at a DC government hearing, or analyze social media campaign results with junior communications staff and revise practices accordingly.

Like other senior DC SCORES staff, the Director will be expected to work all major program and fundraising events, including those after hours and on weekends, and support one soccer game a week during the fall and spring season. The Director reports directly to the Chief Development Officer, works very closely with the Executive Director, and the Board of Directors, and manages the other communications staff.


The main focus of this position is to design, develop, and execute strategic communications activities that elevate the brand profile of DC SCORES with multiple stakeholders, for the dual purpose of furthering programmatic and fundraising goals. Specifically, this person will focus on:


  • Develop a consistent internal and external corporate brand messaging strategy that is reflected across all organizational activities and communications.
  • Proactively develop key messages and talking points, both general and for specific audiences.
  • Manage the implementation of those key messages and talking points across all organizational communications (e.g. web, marketing, PR, parents, school partners, donors, government testimony, etc…).
  • Provide direction on consistent message development and support to staff and Board.
  • Proactively seek and manage visibility opportunities (e.g. panels, conference keynotes, presentations, government testimony, guest blogs, op-eds).
  • Identify, build relationships with, and pitch groups, organizations, and individuals that could provide strategic exposure, including all necessary follow-up efforts (e.g. executive schedule coordination, sharing of bio information, conference or testimony registration, preparation and submission of required advance materials, etc..).
  • Develop executives’ presentations, interview talking points, testimony talking points, and speeches – consistent with communications key messages and targeted to the relevant audience.


  • Uncover and exploit exposure opportunities with local and national top-tier media, and hyper-local, sports-focused, and nonprofit-oriented publications.
  • Identify & build relationships with new and existing editors, reporters, producers, bloggers and sports analysts to increase earned media coverage.
  • Drive editorial story planning, writing and pitching to local and national press, including all necessary reporter follow-up efforts (fact-finding, quote development/approval, executive interview coordination, etc.).
  • Go on record as organizational spokesperson when executives are not available.


  • Develop strategic communications campaigns and collateral to support program and fundraising activities/goals across the organization.
  • Take a client-service-oriented approach to collateral creation, with staff members and Board members responsible for external relationships with core stakeholders being your clients.
  • Create (or manage creation of) all stock and custom collateral for the organization and your “clients”, including videos, infographics, invitations, blogs, event-specific websites, donor pitch presentations, etc…
  • Proactively drive editorial story planning for internally-produced (or managed) videos and blogs to meet specific client-identified fundraising and program needs.
  • Manage up to two other communications staff as they execute crowdfunding campaigns, social media campaigns, blog and website management, and other tactical day-to-day communications activities.

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 4-6 years experience in high-impact, hands-on strategic communications preferred. Design skills a plus. Soccer or spoken word / poetry knowledge a plus. Spanish or Amharic fluency a plus.

The compensation package includes a starting salary between $63,362 and $73,637 depending on experience, an annual professional development budget, great health benefits, a 403b plan, a wellness stipend, an EAP plan, and roughly a month of personal leave, including personal days to take at your discretion and approximately 2.5-3 weeks when the office is closed (select mental wellness Fridays, 1st week of August, and over the year-end holidays).
