Position Summary:

Humanity United is seeking an experienced Director to lead the Strategic Communications team within the organization’s Public Engagement portfolio. The Director will join a team of passionate human rights advocates committed to advancing Humanity United’s mission and the goals of its programs and partners, through the effective use of communications and influence strategies. The Director will develop a communications strategy that helps reach and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. This person will have the opportunity to evolve the Communications team and provide strategic advice and support across the organization. Importantly, the Director will also help implement Humanity United’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) action plan for the Communications team. The successful candidate must be committed to HU’s mission and values.

The Director, Communications is a full-time, exempt position that will report to the Managing Director, Public Engagement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all HU staff are able to work from home. Our future hybrid work approach will provide staff with continued flexibility for regular remote work.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Establish vision, strategy and direction for the Strategic Communications team.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, development and management to a dispersed communications team, including consultants.
  • Develop and apply communications strategies to support the organization’s mission, programs, and its partners.
  • Manage, cultivate, and deploy the organization’s voice and reputation.
  • Build an earned media engagement strategy that actively positions Humanity United and its partners’ work and points of view.
  • Design and implement a thought leadership and positioning strategy for senior leaders and key partners.
  • Implement communications strategies that elevate the voices and perspectives of HU’s partners and support their organizational goals.
  • Proactively position the Strategic Communications team to ensure it is an integral part of Humanity United’s programmatic work and partner support, and that it is best able to support the organization’s mission.
  • Manage key relationships on behalf of the organization, including with partners, media, and agencies.
  • Partner with stakeholders to craft messages about key priorities, issues, and initiatives.
  • In collaboration with the Managing Director, Public Engagement, help lead crisis communications.
  • Create the communications team’s annual budget, oversee budget forecasting, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Serve as a thought leader on communications in the philanthropic field and beyond.

Must Have Requirements

  • Programmatic requirements include:
  • Extensive leadership experience in developing and implementing effective communications strategies for multiple audiences and across various channels.
  • Advanced knowledge of strategic communications best practices, particularly in strategic messaging, global reputation management, and media relations.
  • Keen understanding of the importance of narratives and storytelling—and the ability to support colleagues and partners to effectively hone this skill.
  • Enthusiasm, maturity, and proven leadership, with the ability to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels within the organization and in coalition settings.
  • Ability to thoughtfully engage high level executives and support their communications needs.
  • Humility and dedication to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, partners, grantees, and others.
  • Experience in leading corporate communications.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  •  A strong belief in, and commitment to, HU’s core values, with a perspective on how to apply DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice) in strategic communications.
  • Operational requirements include:
  • Strong understanding of budget and operations.
  • Excellent and proven experience as an effective people manager.
  • Highly collaborative style, relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence.”
  • Self-starter, able to work independently but also collaboratively.
  • A great teammate, with a no-ego mentality, strong emotional intelligence, and a positive attitude.

The salary range for this position will vary by location, to account for cost of living. The range begins at $135,000 for Washington D.C.-based candidates and $150,000 for San Francisco-based candidates.
