The Director of Communications / Managing Editor is responsible for producing original content, managing media relations, and creating media moments and visibility for NCRC’s national programs and policy views to advance a Just Economy. You manage the flow of information between NCRC and the public. The director must have a deep understanding of banking, housing, and financial services policies, and a passion for racial, economic, and social justice. The director develops and manages a cohesive communications strategy and works to elevate and enhance NCRC’s brand and content. The director will be crucial in distilling our views, programs, and calls to action into content that excites, activates, and expands our audiences and influence.

As a leader and member of the publishing and media relations teams, you will serve as a critical link and internal partner for collaboration, co-creation, and information sharing with NCRC’s policy, government relations, organizing, program and executive teams.

Through a mix of writing, editing, media production, social media, events, and media relations leadership you will make our story, programs, policy analysis, views, and campaigns more visible, appealing, easier to understand, and more influential with more people, including national and regional media, progressive allies, the general public, non-expert supporters, other progressive leaders and influencers, foundations and donors, policymakers and industry experts.


  • Develop and communicate our views and policy positions on key issues
  • Write press releases, articles, OpEds, reports, event and video scripts, email, social media, and other messages
  • Manage media relations and protect our image and reputation
  • Coordinate prep for CEO interviews and speaking
  • Liaise with policy, organizing, membership, program and executive teams regarding announcements, issues management, and launches.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with internal partners in policy, government relations, legal, membership, executive and program teams.
  • Develop campaigns to educate members, policymakers and the public on key policy-related issues.
  • Seek ways to grow NCRC’s media exposure, influence, audience and funding
  • Develop co-publishing collaborations and syndication channels to expand the distribution and visibility of our content
  • Pitch NCRC’s positions, spokespeople, insights and views to reporters, broadcasters and event organizers, handle the necessary logistics, manage preparation, research, and follow up
  • Turn technical policy analysis into pointed and accessible messages and soundbites
  • Edit and enforce copy and design standards
  • Identify media training opportunities for our staff
  • Monitor our brand across traditional and social media entities
  • Ensure quality control of all communications and information released
  • Crisis management and pre-emptive communications planning
  • Anticipate and insert NCRC and views into news and current events
  • Supervise and recruit staff
  • Lead and collaborate with branding, marketing, design and comms team and external agencies and contractors, as needed, to develop and execute strategies to grow our audience, brand and influence
  • Report performance metrics to assess the scope, reach and impact of media outreach, publishing, speaking, audience growth, and provide regular reports about this.
  • Manage and edit blog posts, briefs and reports from staff and external contributors
  • Oversee the editorial calendar, internal reviews and production process in collaboration with our graphic design and publication manager
  • Monitor trends in advocacy, tools, strategies and approaches, and advise Chief Communications & Marketing Officer on new approaches
  • Support, socialize, evolve and enforce NCRC’s brand and communications standards
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Writing and Research Skills: Write press releases, articles, OpEds, reports, events, speech and video scripts, email newsletters and campaigns, social media, and other messages
  • PR: Nurture relationships with reporters, editors, and producers. Book media interviews and speaking for TV, Radio, podcasts, and live events.
  • Publishing: Manage content and grow audiences through the web, email, and social media publishing and production
  • Editor: Edit and refine text for clarity, message, and style
  • Strategic Communications: Set and refine PR, publishing, and other communications strategies to achieve attention, influence, audience growth, and other goals
  • Digital Media: Post, edit, and supervise design, production and distribution of content via WordPress and other platforms.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 5-10 years of related experience preferably in journalism, politics, government, PR, public affairs, or in the financial services, housing or social impact sectors working on complex policy issues, media relations, and content creation
  • Links to past work showing excellent writing, editing, PR, publishing, and research skills
  • A diverse network of journalists, writers, agencies, and other key contacts
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and growth mindset
  • Prior experience with booking media interviews and speaking for TV, Radio, podcasts, and live events
  • Experience working in a national or global nonprofit, association, start-up, or high growth environment preferred
  • Experience working in a media, public affairs, or thought leadership organization is a plus
  • Experience working in events is a plus
  • Adept and experience with web, email, and social media publishing, production, presenting data and infographics
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced setting

Salary range: $110K-$120K, commensurate with experience.
