By working closely with the US government and coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, our Corporate and Government Affairs team represents United on public policy and legislative issues. And our Environmental Affairs team is equally working hard to shape an environmentally sustainable future. Together these teams advocate for a cleaner, safer, and more optimistic future for our airline, our employees, and the millions of customers we serve all around the globe.

Key Responsibilities:

Represent United Airlines (UA), its employees and its legislative goals before the Congress, as part of the Congressional team reporting to the Managing Director of Congressional Affairs and SVP of Global Government Affairs and Public Policy.

  • Coordinating and assisting the MD of Congressional Affairs in all areas of federal advocacy, written and verbal
  • Monitoring the introduction and legislative process (e.g., hearings, markups) of pertinent legislation, leading on the issues assigned to employees’ portfolio
  • Evaluating proposed legislation and identifying internal UA partners for the purpose of developing a UA legislative position Negotiating legislative language with key staff and Members of Congress to the benefit of UA and/or the industry
  • Assisting in the development of and implementation of legislative strategies and campaigns (including grassroots campaigns as necessary) to advance UA’s business and corporate interests (leading on the issues of employees’ portfolio)
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with Members of Congress from all UA hub states and key Committees (House and Senate), key staff and industry partners
  • Represent UA at key political events
  • Assist the United Airlines Political Action Committee in recruiting, spending decisions and attending events
  • Support lobbying reporting activities
  • Engage United’s outside legislative consultants to ensure they are in line with UA advocacy goals
  • Represent UA in key trade association, including A4A
  • Maintain steady flow of information with key internal partners on federal activities
  • Draft documents/background in preparation for officer visits to DC
  • Accompany officers to Hill meetings/events
  • Legislative portfolio would include issues related to aviation security and facilitation
  • Congressional oversight
  • Passenger and consumer issues and pursuit of competitive regulatory environment

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree required plus 12 years of relevant experience
  • 7 years of Congressional, lobbying, or legislative experience required
  • Ability to understand and advocate for airline industry
  • Experience with transportation security and government oversight issues preferred
  • Proven leadership capability, including the ability to recruit and motivate
  • Must be a goal oriented, self-starter who can work both independently and, on a team,
  • Superior writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to clearly articulate company goals and a proven ability to influence/collaborate
  • Maturity and ability to lead change in a highly complex environment
  • Ability to share ideas and develop effective responses OR to know that you must elevate to higher management for review/consultation
  • Committed to the long-term success of UA
  • Great teammate and team communicator
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
  • This role follows a hybrid scheduling model

What will help propel you from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Graduate or advanced degree preferred
  • Congressional and lobbying experience in areas of security and oversight preferred
