Bechtel, one of the most respected engineering, construction, and project-management companies in the world, is seeking a seasoned media relations professional to join its award-winning Global Corporate Affairs organization to lead the company’s global corporate media relations function.

This is the company’s senior media relations position, reporting to the principal vice president of Global Corporate Affairs. The successful candidate will work with a small team of Corporate Affairs peers and other senior managers to develop, execute, and measure a comprehensive, proactive media and communications strategy for the company Tier 1 media relationships are a prerequisite, along with the ability to work confidently at the executive level. The position does not have direct reports; however, the director serves as the lead in a matrix of business unit communicators and media specialists. The position is based in Reston, VA and will have a lead role in:

– Creating and executing a global media relations program
– Managing corporate-level media and communications by:
– working with senior management across all businesses and functions to develop, execute, and measure an integrated media and communications program;
– defining key messages and providing strategic thought, vision and leadership on marketing communications;
– managing the company’s relationships with external media relations firms, as required
– Building and maintaining constructive relationships with key media representatives

– Communicating about Bechtel to a variety of external audiences, including news and trade media as well as other stakeholders and key influencers
– Pitching Bechtel news items and scheduling and preparing subject-matter experts for media interviews
– Generating strategies and tactics to increase familiarity with Bechtel and support for its activities through all media channels including social and digital media. Strong and proven issues-management experience with the ability to anticipate issues and media concerns and prepare appropriate responses
– Supporting crisis communications
– Managing a media relations database and ensuring its continued development and use by communications professionals throughout the company
– Providing ongoing analysis of media activities, trends and outcomes for use in decision making

The position requires:

– Demonstrated media relations expertise and media contacts/relationships Outstanding news judgment
– Successful track record working in large, matrixed organizations
– Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based, matrix organization, across time zones and cultures, and within a community of communications and engineering and construction professionals
– Critical thinking skills and the ability to grasp complex matters quickly •Awareness of political, economic, technical and social issues and trends
– Outstanding writing and editorial skills, as he/she will draft and edit carefully crafted press releases, statements, op-ed articles, speeches, letters to the editor and briefing materials
– Fifteen years working in the media relations/communications fields or as a journalist, including at least five years in a leadership position
– BA in journalism, communications, or related field; MA in business, communications or a related field and second language skills are a plus
