PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

This position provides counsel to senior executives on effective ways to engage, manage and leverage the media. This person is the face and voice of the company and serves as spokesperson and chief media strategist. Additionally, this position is responsible for effectively positioning Exelon executives in the media and creating opportunities for press that positively impact Exelon’s reputation in key markets and industry media outlets.

The incumbent manages a staff of three to respond to daily inquiries while designing and executing an aggressive and strategic editorial calendar and media outreach plan. This candidate leads the development and execution of proactive communications plans – both external and internal – to drive business performance with key stakeholders. He/she also develops and manages a wide array of corporate messaging materials, including news releases, fact sheets, holding statements, internal announcements, etc.

This position provides/coordinates media training to executives and managers as necessary to ensure clear, consistent messaging related to Exelon’s business strategy and growth opportunities and lead crisis communications planning and training. The position also develops measurements and processes that accurately track effectiveness of communications activities while supporting Exelon’s investor relations (IR) outreach through development of financial communications such as quarterly earnings releases, prepared remarks and other materials.

Primary Duties And Accountabilities

Item Accountability

1 Ensure quality and effective communication of company goals and initiatives to external stakeholders, including media, customers, elected officials and regulators

2 Ensure quality of all Exelon media outreach and messaging

3 Manage executive positioning in the media

4 Budget supervision and development

5 Direct staff of three, including hiring, talent development, performance management and recognition

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field
  • At least 12-15 years of relevant experience in a fast-paced, dynamic and technical organization
  • 5 years in a leadership or executiove role
  • An intuitive and highly strategic thinker; exceptional experience leading a team of people; can engender support and trust from a team and lead through influence
  • Project management expert, ability to meet deadlines, establish clear priorities quickly and bring projects to completion on time and within budget
  • A proven track record of working effectively under pressure and handling a heavy workload
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues to various stakeholders
  • Strong intellectual capacity; a quick learner.
  • Known ability to influence public opinion through leadership, credibility and clear message delivery.
  • A highly strategic thinker who is self confident and appropriately aggressive, characterized by such traits as straightforwardness, flexibility, a sense of urgency and at home in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
  • Individual must possess exceptional communications and interpersonal skills

POSITION SCOPE

  • Develop and implement external communications strategy. Individual must work closely with the senior executive team and other Communications Directors across business units.
  • Responsible for measuring effectiveness of communications programs, providing oversight and ensuring execution of programs.
  • Oversee a staff of three, including two senior managers and one specialist. Ability to work cross functionally with VP of Corporate Communications and direct reports to ensure overall success of department.
  • Individual must possess exceptional communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Develop and implement internal and external communications strategy. Individual must work closely with senior executive team and other Communications Directors across business units.
  • Responsible for measuring effectiveness of communications programs, providing oversight and ensuring execution of programs.
